Is this a Scalextric type thing?

  3. Yeah, slot car is the generic American term, and Scalextric is a brand name.

  4. Wow - Christmas present for the grand kids next year then

  5. That's going to be boringly slow. I hope they will release layby, oil stained driveway and large shady pitch with electric hookup strewn with empty wife beater tins track sections for added realism.

Better not be a splittie like the Scalextric version.
    My fingers are crossed.

Does it come with the option of European breakdown cover and a big yellow taxi ?

Will it come with an oil recommendation?

  10. As they've specifically listed it as T2b ... I'm guessing it'll be a T2b :)

  11. It's only the UK and Australia that call slot cars by the Scalextric brand name as they have market dominance despite being the lowest quality toy grade products, northern Europe call them Carrera as they have market dominance, everyone else calls them slot cars because they have 4 or 5 brands with reasonably equal share of their markets :)

  12. Were they always low quality? We had Scalextric as kids (a long time ago) and really abused it, don't remember having issues.

    Ooh.
I shall have to dig my Scalextric 500 out of the attic…

  14. No, but only electric - no real boxer engine, grrrr o_O

"Carrera" was inspired by the Porsche Carrera models in the early '60s (with license by Porsche) and is the German term for slot cars, even though we had some other good slot car companies (e.g. "Faller" and its "Faller Club Racing international", "Märklin Sprint", "Fleischmann Auto-Rallye"). Typical scale are 1:32 and 1:24. Scalextric is somehow unknown here - and was only the first one with push-button speed controls - but there were others before.

    Märklin from 1934:

I've loved the bigger/faster 1:24 scale "Carrera 124" (1963-1984, renamed to "Carrera Exclusiv" 1989-2007, renamed to "Carrera Digital 124" since 2008) since I was a kid (left side - with my brother mid '70s). I also had some of my uncle's "Faller" cars when he was younger. But kind of boring today... even with the digital upgrades... compared to RC cars or realistic computer race games or real cars.

Is it true they're doing a twin pack which includes a recovery vehicle?
