  1. The dip stick is broke . Its not sealing on the tubey thing. Could that be it.?

  2. Is there a bit of golf hate on here?

  3. Quite possibly, off to the scrappy we go then.

  4. yes....take the dipstick out and block the hole with your finger....the idle should change

  5. Great even I could fix this!!!!. Will keep u posted:chewie:

  6. Clean out the throttle body.....it'll have carbon build up which stops the throttle butterfly closing fully on tickover and can cause idling issues. Check all the vac pipes are in good nick and there aren't any splits or disconnects. Clean the MAF with carburettor cleaner (give it a good spray through and allow to dry) before looking for a new one as this will often sort out a dodgy one. Need to get it on a VAGcom reader really though as without a fault code and definition it could be a whole load of things. Mk4's are generally bulletproof though if looked after so it'll probs be a minor :) although the 2.0l normally aspirated (GTi pahahaha!) is a bit of wheezy old lump next to the 1800 turbo's :p

The broken dipstick tube is a common cause of idle problems, GSF sell them for around £5 genuine vw, also check all the hoses that come off the rocker cover and around the rocker cover as they go soft and fall apart causing air leaks and idle issues, almost certainly not an air flow meter issue, clean throttle body etc as above and ensue your idle position sensor is operating and the throttle butterfly is art correctly

  8. no I don't hate anyone, unless they are tories...

My posts are just a joke on some of my observations over the years - quite generalist and not meant to offend.

Anyhow @Gian , did you try any of my tips? Did they work? Mine are much cleaner than getting an oily finger...

    :)

  9. Proper golfs (Mk1 & 2's) are awesome!
All went a bit wrong after that i.m.o. although the Mk4 is a solid reliable motor, and attractive in its own way. Also dirt cheap as they were so popular and a great source of transplant engines for earlier stuff.
Can't beat a Mk1 Jetta or polo though in my book.......two of the coolest, most under appreciated cars of the early 80's! Shame they had to become so rare before people realised it....crazy money now!!

  10. I've had a couple of mk1 polos and regret not keeping them tbh but have to say mk3 polo gt's have always been my favorite! Currently on a mk5 gti as my daily now tho and I have to say its a brilliant car, had it over a year now which appart from my bus has never happened with a car with me before.

  11. Yeah the GT coupe is a nice looking car, and starting to appreciate now :)
I bought my mrs a squarelight breadvan and that's been an ace car so far!

  12. There quick too, one of very few cars I've owned which will hit the rev limiter in top. Even if it is only 110ish. Got my eye on one round the corner from me ;)

  13. Big thank you to all TLBs that helped.
My 2001 golf 2.0l cabriolet was cutting out at every opportunity. I changed broken dip stick , but it still cut out. I cleaned ecu plug with a well known penatrating lubricant. (Dont know if what was the best thing to use) Driven it 3 times over the last couple of days and its not cut out once. Very happy :chewie: . The only prob is i disconnected the battery and now the radio needs a code any ideas?

  14. So the PCV was OK? someone else had a similar issue, but can't remember who....hope he sees your post....
