I think this thread has ended up being a vote to see who's got what poptop, not which poptop is the best. If I owed a Devon or whatever (which of course I'd love to bits) that's the one I'd vote for. But that's not what I thought this thread was about. I'd guess the rear-hinge Westy hasn't done so well just because they're so rare in the UK and the majority here on TLB don't own one. Certainly, an RHD rear-hinge Westy are the rarest of all, which is why they command the highest price. My Ozzy RHD is currently a tin top and when I first bought it, I didn't really know much about poptops. But I knew I wanted to convert it. It didn't take long, during research and reading heaps of write-ups, to realise that the most superior conversion was the Westfalia and, of their poptops, the best version was the later rear-hinge. That seemed to be the general consensus out there from all the experts, those in the scene, those in the know, and from all the write-ups I read. According to this, it's the King of poptops without any doubt. So that's the conversion I'm going for. My second favourite was the Devon 'double-top' as some refer to it as (I think they're known as Moonrakers) because, like the Westy, its got a proper double bed in the roof.
What you had was a Sunliner conversion exactly the same as we have. The interior in ours has been chopped around since it was built in 1974 & is about to go onto the scrap heap/ bonfire. A new one is being constructed without the sink or cooker & no big wardrobe. We do all cooking outside & no longer use the old Electrolux fridge (which went to a good home)
Thanks guys it looks like I've got a sopru which some of you may know has had a bit of bother recently and is now being manufactured all over again by various factories after my accident.
That was you was it. We've all been there or at least close. Almost lost mine in a gale-force wind on the Forth Bridge when all the straps on the danbury roof pinged off and the roof shot up turning the bus into a clipper with all sheets to the wind! the Mrs dived into the back grabbing hold of the roof by the handles for putting it up as it shot up and down like a remote control ed accordion. looking in the mirror all I could see were her legs dangling down. nearly crashed the bus laughing! (spose you had to be there)!
