Kidney stones

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by the2ems, Sep 2, 2020.

  1. Spent all yesterday and last night in hospital with what has now been diagnosed as a small kidney stone. 2-3mm. I can honestly say it was the most intense pain I have ever experienced. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

  4. My son and wife both had kidney stones about 2 years ago - they said it was agony too. I think that the ultra sound treatment broke the stones up successfully. Good luck with yours.

  5. Been there, 6mm. 8 hours curled up in a ball on the sofa waiting for an ambulance that never came. Mrs paneuropaul found me and took me to A&E when we got there she had "accidently" left her Dorset social services ID on.
    Got seen quick after that.
    Drink plenty, it will pass.
You have my sympathy for the pain. Hope you manage to pass it ok.

  6. Me too. It’s only a small one, and they said I may not feel it. But if anyone is running a poll about diclafenac up the bum, it’s a yes from me.

  9. Have had kidney stones twice, about 16 years ago then august last year spent 3 nights in the Royal Berks absolute kin agony.
They were unable to blast them so sky high on pain killers for a couple of weeks. When they pass you know all about it. Doc
described it as the QE2 trying to navigate the Kennet and Avon canal and said i should drink more.

  10. That really is the only thing that makes the pain go away, It's amazing how you lose any notion of "up my bum?" when it makes the pain go.
Does somewhat focus the mind to drink more, doesn't it?

  11. Many years ago my wife rushed me to A and E with a pain that was indescribable. The doc said it was a pain worse than childbirth, which I made him repeat when the missus was within earshot.

Yes I had a large pill up the bum too which the doc administered, amazingly with both his hands on my shoulders

    What causes kidney stones?

  13. You should pass it, with fluids and pain killers, the ureter and urethra probably has a diameter of 5mm, and once it is in the bladder it will not give you much trouble, you probably will pass it without noticing. However renal colic is bad , most patients can be diagnosed by being semi naked on the bathroom floor, vomiting with pain. Of course t there are degrees of pain in proportion to the size of the stone. Drink plenty, alcohol has a diuretic property.

It’s usually waste products from your diet that crystallise and form small stones in your Kidneys. Men are more prone to it for some reason. It’s a very common condition but most people will pass them and not even notice. Drinking plenty helps. A diet lower in some foods is thought to help as well, but the main thing is drinking.

Can you illaberate on ‘waste products’, please?
One of my elderly customers (85), is suffering with this at the moment. She’s old school, and only ever eaten healthily, she tells me.

Waste products, ie what bits of your diet your body doesn’t use so excretes them in your poo or wee. It’s thought that some foods that are high in something called oxalate can contribute. Spinach, a pretty healthy food to eat, contains oxalate. So you can eat “healthy” and still get kidney stones. Like I say, fluid, that’s what you need.

If your customer is worried at all she needs to speak to her doctor or nurse

Just asking, as I used to suffer from gout a lot, until I completely changed my lifestyle and diet, as I don’t want to have to take tablets all my life.
My problem was Uric acid build up. Even certain spring water can cause it for me, as it’s to do with ph levels. My customer, like I mentioned, has always eaten Sparingly, but healthily, so I suppose, even eating healthily for some, may not be good for others, as I also know older people that has never had the kidney stone problem.
    Thanks.

I think a lot of people get it around our area due to hardness of the tap water
