Is it really cheaper to save ten pence on a pint of milk when it costs you ten miles of fuel and half your day trying to find a place to park Then having to battle with other shoppers all needing to get the shopping done and get back to whats important to them My milk i but from the village shop It costs me ten pence per litre more than the supermarket However a trip to buy milk is a social interaction activity round here and to me is worth its weight in gold Quite often i feel the modern worls is missing the point of being human and alive
i used to work with a guy who would drive past our local petrol station on his way to work (example price £129.9) and then at lunch time drive 2 miles to put £15 in his tank 3 times a week cos it was £127.9 and saved him 2p (grand total 90p saved) he honestly thought he was on a winner (£15 3 times to save weight and thus use less fuel) i kid you not..... i get my milk at the local paper shop 99p for 2 litres.
I get mine from supermarket. If I only shopped at local shop I would be stuck eating chips everyday as thats all they sell mealwise. However on route to the supermarket I pass a farm shop so get my fruit, veg and sausages from there.
just recently around us we have Milk vending machines, just like what you would get crisps and Pop out of, one near a local butchers, and at least 2 others I can think of...bizarre.
We tried this for a while, but either ended up with a glut of milk or none. The guy delivering didn't get to us until 10:00am so if we ran out the night before it was no good. We both worked so the milk stayed out all day in the summer. It seemed to cost a fortune, especially if you missed paying for a couple of weeks, which we did because he never called while we were at home. We now buy from a supermarket and freeze our milk and bread.
We tried the old milkman saga and had similar experiences, he delivered milk after we had left for work so in summer it had gone off in the sun all day, left extra bottles when not asked for etc etc ect. So supermarket for us, our local shop don't do the white stuff. Just wished the milkman was more accommodating.
we still get ours delivered but have to top up from the local shop 50yds away so we dont end up with too much when the kids inexplicably stop drinking it for a few days. I dont mind paying a bit more for the service, comes at 6am but only 3 times a week due to lack of demand and he now has two rounds done on alternate days
Our village shop shut years ago and is now a house More worrying is what do they do to supermarket milk now its will last a week very worrying On a side note you can beat warm milk straight from the farm use to have this as a kid
One of our local dairy farmers has started marketing their own milk. It's pasteurised but not homogenised, so you still get the cream on the top, just like when I was a young 'un. Costs more than the supermarket but it does taste better http://www.locavored.com/the-pines-comes-full-circle/
We have a bread van 3 times a week, a meat once a week and a fish van once a week (on Fridays of course) anything else we shops of all shapes and sizes.
I like our local shops on the estate up the road they are on this video by my mate Dan Stick with it, It's all tongue in cheek
You may not know this but...... I HATE SUPERMARKETS with a vengeance, dirty, underhanded, despicable, no good, lying, thieving, scoundrels the lot of them. Not that I am biased in any way.
I agree... I worked in the local one for a bit... as an employee, you're basically treated like a slave, and if no-one turns in for the previous shifts, they expect you to do the whole days work (16+hrs) in your 4hr shift And the daily wastage is just ridiculous!! They were averaging £1600 wastage a week My parents kept goats when I was a lad... fresh, unpasteurized milk everyday.... summertime I'd be drinking around 3 pints of the stuff a day... unless they'd been in the clover patch, then it went down the sink as it tainted the milk so badly it was virtually rancid!!
