Is there meant to be oil in here?

  1. Hi all,

I took off the inlet manifold today in preparation to remove the heads to change the pushrod tubes.

I looked down the hole in the head where the fuel/air mix enters and saw this:

Im pretty sure its oil. Is this something to be concerned about?

  2. No there shouldnt be. I would guess at valve guides.

  3. prob worked its way in there when youve jiggled it about..[oh er muisses]

if it was a major issue it would have been smokin like a good un ....1

had it lost any oil before removeal...?

  4. yeah, worn guides... although your inlet gaskets are quite oily too

  5. It was a little bit smokey before I removed it but not much.

It was leaking oil but I think that was from the crankshaft oil seal and dodgy pushrod tubes.....

The inlet manifold wasn't bolted down very tightly at all on this side.

I'm getting paranoid about this sodding engine now!

When I overfilled the oil, quite a lot ended up going via the crankcase breather and chrome air filter box and back down the carburettor. Pools of oil in the filter base.

There was noticeable grey smoke .

This may not apply in this case but its another possible reason
