Want to get my van checked out to see if it is running to it's full potential (or if there are any electrical concerns!)Does anyone know anywhere in the south Wales/South West that perform a rolling road or checks on t2's?
first things first... I'd get a comp test done by a good garage, or someone that you know... That'll give you an idea of what condition the engine is in before paying out of a RR session!!
Excuse me being a retard.... but whats a comp test? computer test?? Are RR sessions quite expensive then??
45 mins, i'm based in gloucestershire, but working up in Swansea at the moment & thats where I have the van.
You have a few local rolling road places, expect to pay about £100ish http://www.willfieldmotors.co.uk/ http://www.gotboost.co.uk/ http://www.rollingmotion.co.uk/ http://www.mosleysgarage.co.uk/ compression test any garage can sort that out for you.
or DIY this is what I've got http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=compression+tester&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&oe=utf8&rlz=1I7GGIT_en-GB&redir_esc=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=5252100665649165567&sa=X&ei=0tBUUI-4NNO1hAe7rIDYCw&ved=0CE0Q8wIwAA#
Andy - fancy meeting up and going through how this works and put mine through your tool? i'll obviously pay you for your time
Is there a fault? Low power, misfire, judder etc or are you just looking for a tune up? Interpro in thornbury have a rolling road
if you have a machinemart anywhere near you get one of these kits and do it yourself if you are not sure which one will do just ask the staff its o so easy http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/search/filter/compression+test/type/any/page/1
... in short the answer is . if you do not know, the answer is most likely 'no'. Get the compression checked , adjust the timing and tappet clearances, check the plugs are a nice colour showing good mixture. Then take the bus on a drive involving a couple of hills . Change one setting and then take it for another drive on the same route- compare performance. I have my bus insured for 'commuting' so I can use the drive to and from work as a benchmark if I want to use the same route.
1st of all does your engine used a lot of oil. (burn) do you have pionts or a electronic device like a pertronix in the dizzy, and have you done your tappets or had them done lately. if you dont used much oil, (not from leaks) then i would say your compression should be as good as it should be? but doing the tappets and timing, and adjusting the points etc, and always try not too put too much petrol in it if it aint getting used much as it goes stale.... once you have done these things and run it a bit you should see an improvement. you have to remember ther usually carry a lot of weight, and once the timing goes out a bit, you soon notice a bit of a slow down on hills take off etc. dont get throwing money away on rolling roads test, a good service may be cheaper hope this helps...
Thanks for this Phil... Couple of questions: Petronix in the Dizzy? Is it easy for a newbee to do tappets and timings & adjusting points or is this something for a garage? Thanks mate
pertronix is an eletric device thats replaces points its a module you can buy replaces points and condensor. you can do the tappets your self. i just watched a few vids on u tube off top of my head all the tappets are set at 0.006 thou feeler,/ 0.15mm feeler with the engine cold. start with no 1 cylinder at tdc, etc. for the timing you need a timing light i have a gunson strobe one. clips on no 1 lead and on the battery. again straight forward. if you used a garage make sure its someone who knows these old engines and they have a good name. i dont use a garage. if you decide do the tappets get a couple of new rocker cover gaskets mate.
