Been a long time since I've seen a mk2 auto... but I think the surrounds are completely different... not too sure about the starter - I'd have to do a bit of research!!
I heard that they were the same when i was looking for a new starter on my Diesel conversion. Didnt get a chance to confirm it though.
i think the internals are the same pretty sure we had this years ago in cornwall and the AA did a bits swap with something like that !
This is the bit where he says so -- aside from all that, I discovered a "plug'n'play starter that will work with the lawn mower gearbox and be man enough for the engine: it's from a Skoda Felicia 1.9D, the same VW engine but with a Skoda-sourced gearbox. The bolt pattern, mounting flange, pinion are all a perfect match. The pinion shaft is self-supporting so doesn't rely on the brass bush in the gearbox.
Yes he is and he needed a starter motor to fit a 6 rib box that he had used for a better top gear performance. So i think he's sayiing that one fits a six rib box and his particular starter ring.
If it helps. My Diesel conversion uses the KEP adapter which is machined to fit the 1Y crank and match the original flywheel (thus enabling the use of a aircooled clutch and starter motor. I didnt have time to source / test an Automatic or Skoda starter and went with the HiPo Starter from Heritage (looks nice but was expensive).
