Talking of pubs, went to one in Lincoln earlier this year where they had a lock-in during opening hours so we could smoke.

Cheers for the "help" after i went guys...........
anyway back on topic (i know ironic for me to say)
this morning i dug out the installation cd and the instructions incase i needed to uninstall and reinstall and i connected it all back up to work wirelessly so i could find the settings on the router and the damn thing is working fine now! 2 days of buggering me about and all the naffing around last night fetching a long internet lead from work so i could connect hardwired into the modem and i turn it on this morning and the wireless fires up straight away!......so i'm no nearer to why it did it although i wonder if the idea someone said about it conflicting with someone elses wireless is the cause? so should i mess with the settings or leave well alone?

  12. There is usually about a range of 13 channels to choose from. Get an app to see what channels are being used and o to an empty one.

Moons, yes the security is on and the router itself has always been a bit "tetchy" i don't leave the wifi on all the time it just gets turned on when i'm online, i've had the router a few years now although i only started using the wireless part of it about 2 years ago, up until then i disabled the wireless output as i didn't have a password on it, it's sometimes dropped the signal once a night for the past few months but it simply got turned on and off again and fired up perfectly after that, i can live with that but the latest problem was the first time it failed completely, the thing that baffled me was the fact it had connected and was showing connected to the net but it wouldn't let me access the net....i know a lot of people would say "oh well it's working again now, the internet pixies fixed it overnight" but i need to undersand why and what happened for future reference, trouble is i've looked at all the settings and i can't see any problems!

On a more helpful note - sounds to me like the security got out of sync.

Could be your wifi antenna was being blocked or was loose.

Lots of things to be honest - most first line IT advice is to reboot - mine used to act as you described on and off for years until I went to BT Business and had my wifi hacked - I now use the home network duberry that uses the power circuit in the house to carry the internet - just means you get an additional wire going to the plug which is fine as the power lead goes there anyway.

Wifi just dropped out and if you browse available connections my router doesn't show, just like it has been doing recently....just turned off for 10 secs and on again and lappy auto connected back up to it so it seems i still have the router dropping out although it at least is connecting...it's got to be something connected (pardon the pun).

  19. I haven't read all the post so may be talking out my orifice, but have you checked the Virgin service status. I know Sutton Coldfield was playing up the other day, and I used to live just outside Rugely, so that could be a connection :bag:

  20. Try a factory reset
