Calling experts on network stuff, i have a problem with my router (i think) if i explain my set up can anyone advise?
I'm on Virgin cable, it comes into a Modem with one cabled outlet which as i type this i'm running a cable straight from and into my laptop but normally the outlet goes into the input of a wireless router and then i just pick up the signal wirelessly and one of the 4 wired outputs goes to a desktop p.c that isn't wireless enabled, for a while now the wireless signal has been dropping out and i've had to turn off the router and reboot, last night the router wouldn't connect to the laptop even though the laptop could "see" the router, at first i thought it was the laptop but my i-phone won't connect to the router either.....i can't work out how the laptop can see the router but not be connected to the internet all i can think is the router has some sort of fault where it is recieving the modem signal but somehow not letting the laptop/phone actually connect to the net.....i've tried connecting the laptop to a hardwired socket from the router as well but no joy so as i say i'm now just on the net from the modem....any suggestions?

but as i said in my post, the i phone can't use the net via wifi either.....i think the router is somehow recieving a signal from the modem and showing it to the laptop/i phone but somehow not letting it complete the pathway and connect back to the internet......the laptop is "seeing" next doors wifi so i don't think it's the lappy.

  8. Hit it with a hammer

It may fix it but with electronics 99% of the time it kills it properly

At least you will know theres nothing you can do and you may aswell go to the pub

  10. Have you tried to fix the ip address, I had a similar problem things were dropping out and not connecting, I have about 15 to 20 things connected to my router and had to fix the ip address seems to have worked for me.

Mind you I have been through 3 routers in the past few yrs. I just need to to out the connection now mine still drops out when the phone rings. Cue another call to sky.

  11. It could be on the wrong channel and getting interference from your neighbours or other wireless kit. Channels 1, 6 and 11 and uk ones I think from memory.

Go into the routers wireless settings and change it from one of the above to something different and see if that works.

i'll have to have a look tomorrow, it's fried my head tonight, i can't see how it worked one minute then just stopped, stupid thing.

  13. Listen to Mr MadFrankie he helped sort out my problem. Thank you.

Perhaps someone near you has just set up a new router and it's set to the same channel causing interference.
Can you get an app to check the channels and siginal strength. Got one on my Droid phone called wifi analyser.

  14. ^^whs
to get to the settings look on the router and it should give you an ip address put this into your browser. eg(http/162.100.00.00) there is normally a password as well. you'll then have access to all your routers settings.I f its something simple you can sort it from there. Mine wasn't that simple so I had to call the ISP.

ok cheers i saved the router addy as a bookmark last time i had a problem with the password, if it messes me about i'll uninstall and re-install and see what gives, had enough of it for tonight.
