..intermittent wipers

  1. Ahh so switches with three positions are out there.
Was yours originally from a bay if so which models came with them?
May I ask where you got yours?

I have a 74 bay with the paddle shaped stalk ends. All the switches are kind of the same. and there is a little plastic wedge that stops the lever being pulled back for the intermittent swipe if the proper number of wires arent in the switch for it.

So for this year the standard 4-wire switch is 211-955-517: 2 speed and up triggers water through hoses below the switch

Then there is 6-wire switch 211-955-501-C: Extra brown and brown/white wire. Never got this working properly in my bus to figure out exactly what it provides. But it should give fixed intermittent some how with 5 pin relay 111-955-531 with S terminal.

Finally 7-wire switch 211-955-501-D: as above with extra black/red wire. 2 speed , pull up powers electric washer pump, pull back gives fixed speed intermittent via relay 357-955-531 with I/T terminals. I used the wiring diagram I posted above to get this working.
On this switch you can see where the extra wire (red/black) is connected where normally there was the little plastic hose attachment piece. This is the wire i now use to the washer pump.

I've now seen a vanagon 1983 wiring diagram which I think has 7 wires switch using a variable delay I/J terminal and doesnt seem to need the extra change over relay i used.

I'm guessing there are a whole lot of variations on switches for the models that came before and after this year as I think 72-74 was an oddball arrangement.

Trawl ebay/ samba/ trade shows once you figure out which actions and switch you wanna end up with, ebay.de was pretty good for me in the end

    Hope that all makes sense...

    Regards
    Ian

  3. would your six wire switch work with @snotty relay kit using the stalk to fire the intermittent wipe relay or does that stalk not latch and just give a momentary connection?

  4. If it can supply a steady +12 to the relay I, intermittent will run. If it can supply +12 to T when the stalk is pulled back, it'll do wash/wipe. The wash function is usually spring loaded/momentary, like the pneumatic washers, not toggling.

  5. I’m thinking if the intermittent function of the switch does latch to give permanent 12 volts then the valve for the pneumatic washers could be replaced with a micro switch and used to trigger a relay for an electric pump if needed
Then it’s job jobbed with no extra switches on the dash.

Yes, if you replace the water valve with a microswitch plus relay where you already have the wash/wipe connection going to S, then its a completely separate circuit and it will not cause the intermittent wipe on park symptom.

Yes, all the functions on the stalk. Up for the two speeds, down for intermittent and pull for wash/wipe. It’s a normal VW option (I think it is M652 but I’m not at home to check) and uses relay 111 955 531, the 5-wire column switch is 211 953 503A. Intermittent is fixed duration of about 5 seconds between sweeps. Wash/wipe uses the water valve as usual and the wipers sweep 3 times after the wash then park.

  8. Correct, although I'd say you don't need the relay. Mine works fine without one.

  9. Is yours a larger pump on the Swedish reservoir
Do you know what current it pulls?

  10. If your six wire switch latches in the intermittent wipe position I’d be interested in buying it from you.

  11. No, just a boggo little Lucas pump from fleaBay, as my tank didn't come with one. No idea what current it pulls, but the switch works fine.

  12. Like this one, in fact. Fits nicely on the Swedish tank bracket. Smeerdy beerdy.

My switch is only rated at 1A, but you're only operating the washers for a few seconds at a time. Relay's a bit OTT, I think.

Yeah I have a couple of them spare as I switched over to the 7 wire version now. Will probably be looking to recoupe what i paid for it ... £75 inc postage. Not sure if I have to officially put it into the classified section though ?

To be sure its a switch from 72-74, paddle shaped end and sits inside the right hand half of the 2 piece shroud...211-955-501-C

Aye 74 is an odd year...but hopefully '78 had the same range of switches...
