Yes, my ‘77 has a 111 955 531 relay and pneumatic driven washers as standard.

  2. That would imply that Mike is correct, and the "S" relays don't have a wash/wipe function.

It does have wash/wipe but the wash bit is not electric. And if you connect an electric pump to ‘S’ the delay doesn’t work.

  4. The wipers run when you operate the squish washers? How does wash/wipe work?

Yes, 3 or 4 wipes after the wash.

  6. So there is a switch on the pneumatic squisher?

There is, and I tried to connect the electric pump to it but then the delay function doesn’t work. I’ve been meaning to try a diode in the pump supply but haven’t got a roundtoit.

  8. If you fit an I/T relay, it'll all spring to life.

If I knew what a I/T relay was I might try it, but the original relay works apart from operating the electric pump and it might be easier to fit a separate micro switch on the stalk for it – especially as I have a switch but I probably don’t have a I/T relay. :)

  10. If you've got no electrical switch for the washers, how does the relay know when to start the wipe-while-washing?

This may explain the weird wiring diagram - Mike is correct.

The I/T relay is the Meyle one (or equivalent) mentioned elsewhere in the thread.

It has an electrical switch but it’s for the relay, not the washers. It’s just the intermittent wiper option as VW manufactured it with a 111 955 531 relay. It works perfectly including wash wipe but the washers are pneumatic.

If you simply connect an electrical pump to the existing column switch the intermittent function doesn’t work and the wipers stop as soon as the wash stops – probably because it’s grounding the wire through the pump motor as Mike suspects.

I’ll try a diode in the pump motor supply when I’m there fitting the Golf wiper motor, with the pigtail loom and bracket you have kindly sold me.

  12. Bizarre.

Seriously, while everything's out just swap the relay and do a bit of rewiring, and you'll have everything working

Well, bizarre it might be but it’s how VW did it. Two speeds, wash/wipe and intermittent, albeit with fixed interval, it’s worked without changing the relay or the wiring since 1977.

I shall do a bit of research. But I am sure a diode by itself will not help, but i am also sure that there is a simple circuit addition to make the S terminal type relay work with an electric pump.

  15. Wasn't implying it doesn't work!

As far as I'm aware, Bays didn't get electric washers apart from the Swedes, hence the odd workings of the S relay.

I gave up on the 501-C switch and S type relay. No way it can do the intermittent and washer pump as folks are saying. Managed to get a 7-wire 501-D switch. It has the br/wh and br wires as per the other switch plus another bk/red thats going specifically for the washer motor. Works great with the I/T relay and a standard 30A changeover relay. Both the relays are in the fuse box , job over...

Here is the back of the switch

  17. Excellent! Sometimes it's best just to give up on these things. The relay with I and T separate makes things a lot easier.

S1 from switch does now go into a change over relay. I think this could be the problem with the S1 on 211-955-501-C.
Anyhow i now have 2 spare switches of the 501-c variety...

  19. Does your washer stalk have an intermittent as well as two speeds?

yeah its took a bit of messing about but finally got there a couple of days ago. I was trying to do too much with the wrong switch originally. New one was a bit like spaghetti junction before I got it fixed into the fuse box etc
