interfering 2@'s and 'well meaning' members of the public rant...

I work full time as cycling instructor, teaching children how to ride on the road safely. It's a government-funded initiative designed to improve awareness and provide children aged 9-11 with an opportunity to learn some basic road skills. By nature, it's a high profile exercise, that's the whole point. In the main, schools, parents and members of the public are very supportive, and regularly offer words of encouragement when we're out on the roads. Every now and then, however, someone takes it upon themselves to intervene, and point out that we shouldn't be doing it....that it's dangerous...that children shouldn't be allowed on the road.
This afternoon, one such chap pulled in front of me, as I was leading my group, slammed his brakes on, wound his window down and proceeded to tell me how to do my job. He then said he was going to report it to the Police....all the while blocking the road with his car....he then tried taking a photo of the children, so I had to block his view.....what a complete D*ckhead.
Trouble is, you can't argue the toss, or tell them to f*ck off and mind their own business, as there are kids present....so we have to stand there, while they rant...and then deal with the consequences...when he drove off, one of my girls then started to cry because she thought she'd done something wrong and the Police would be involved....Thanks Mate!

It really f*cks me off when folk do this, as a) it interferes with the training, b) it upsets the children and c) they only ever see a 'snapshot' of the training we do, and formulate a disparaging opinion based on that.

Every child undergoes a two hour formal assesement on the playground prior to any road-based training, and if they aren't up to scratch, in terms of cycling skills or behaviour, they don't come out.
We work in small groups of up to six, on quiet roads, introducing basic concepts of road positioning, how to improve visibility, how and when to communicate intentions etc. The training progresses inline with the trainees' abilitites, with more complex situations being introduced if, and only when they are ready.

This guy 'phoned the school...he's not the first 'well meaning' member of the public to do so. The trouble is, if the school then think that they can do without the aggro, they may decide to stop having cycle training altogether...so everyone loses out. We don't take risks....it's stressful enough as it is, without having to put up with the likes of this......
