Indicator stalk gone floppy

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Sick Boy, May 26, 2020.

  1. I have a July 72 crossover LHD. My indicator stalk went floppy in the middle yesterday. I can still use it but you have to carefully put it back in the middle so that it stops indicating left or right. I hear that it's really difficult to find replacement parts for an indicator switch so any suggestions?

  2. Have you tried the blue pill

  3. Replace it? Is it the earlier or later type?

  4. I think it's the earlier type - just the one stalk. Looking through tlb search it seems they are very hard to find?

  5. Is it the chunky one or the later slim thin one?

If it's like mine ...which it probably is , maybe the two screws either side under the stalks have worked loose if so tighten them up ...they are a terrible design , the later ones are well better .

Does it move about from left to right depending which stalk you use . i have even resorted to binding it together with insulating tape .

  7. It's the slim thin one

  8. Thanks i will look for screws underneath to tighten - but it has only the one stalk so different from yours?

  9. You can get repros of them. Not sure how good they are.

  10. Thanks for your replies - i have checked the usual ones but not found one yet. Will keep looking.

  11. Have a look at Machine7. On sale.

Shocking price, I hope mine never breaks!

  14. Looks like Machine 7 is the answer. Expensive, but at least i can get one. They point out that it doesn't look like the original but that's no problem. Even my engine doesn't look like the original. Thanks for all help and advice.

  16. Make ya mind up ;)!

The next one down is £150

  17. Yes, afraid the one I want is the most expensive at £149-50. I wonder why it's so expensive - and so much more than the stalks for other VW vehicles?

  18. I might have a new repro one I bought a few years ago.
In the end I got a NOS one from Australia so it's never been used.
I'll check tomorrow and do some pics. If I haven't posted by tomorrow night message me to remind me.

I found mine could be persuaded to stay together with cable ties. As it has remained for the last 9 years
