idle lumpy

  1. Can anyone help, i've got a 1978 1600 t2, when the van has stopped and left running after about 30 secs the idle speed seems to drop and it becomes very lumpy to the point eventually it would cut out, it runs very well, accelerates through the gears ok and has no flat spots, which is why i'm scratching my head with this one, anyone got any idea's

  2. preheat pipes working properly?

    carb been serviced/set up?

  3. thanks for the pointers, i think i've set the carb up properly, how do you test the preheat pipes to see if they are working ok?

  4. well they have exhaust gasses running through them (well they should unless they are blocked with carbon) so should be around 180°c with the engine running... this stops the carb from icing, and lumpy idles!! If you can touch them (try a water mister bottle first) then likely as not they are blocked!!

do you have the std air filter on there??

carb setting wise, small screw (idle fuel) 3.5 turns out, large screw (air) 2.5 turns out... and the throttle stop screw should just be contacting the choke cam with the choke all the way off!!

  5. just took the van for a run, looking at the van from the back the preheat pipe on the left is really hot, but the one on the left is o lot cooler, i also have the std filter on, i'll check the carb with the settings.

  6. One will be cooler due to the cooling action on the manifold on the preheats (heat transferal and gas flow direction in the preheats)

Could simply have the idle settings a bit lean because it was set up when the engine was not fully warm - mine is badly set and idles extremely lean and lumpy at the moment. (Air Fuel Ratio between 15:1 and 20:1 at idle at the end of 15 miles on the motorway. Will fix when I tune up in a weeks time)

  8. Thanks for the suggestions i took carb off and cleaned it, also found a small piece of old gasket still attached to the bottom of the carb which might of caused a small air leak, started it up took it for a spin and it seems ok fingers crossed.

  9.
