  9. You are wasted driving a lorry, get yourself a workshop and get crafting!

Thanks. I am very pleased with the outcome, she looks quite good, sits well in the water , was very nice to handle and felt very sturdy, more so than I imagined she would. I’m very happy i seem to have built a decent boat that was better on the water than my expectations

  11. Its probably a bit on the small size for a cross channel paddle to Brittany, well done though but learn to splice and tidy up them lines.

  13. did you build it to any plans and how thick ply is the hull built from?

Yes built from fynes quick canoe 155 plans 6mm marine ply.

I chose this canoe because after reading a little of the stability of a flat bottom canoe combined with flare sides that Storer designed it with I guessed it would be more stable on calm river trips than V arch or round bottom canoes for beginners. It proved to be the right choice yesterday, it’s a very stable canoe.

Michael storer design modified slightly by moi.

I cannot make one in a week!

  15. I think I might have looked at some of them before, when thinking about a winter project in the garage. As a sailor and a former shipwright to build and sail appeals.

I quite like the idea of the cedar designs

I’d say crack on with it if you have the room and enjoy doing it. I was a bit hesitant to do this as I’ve never built anything that has to float and carry people before, but given my limited experience I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Those cedar strip ones look like a labour of love, yet fabulous when finished. I’m quite tempted myself.

  17. I'd love to but monies a bit tighter at the moment so one boat will have to be enough for the moment. Wife would kill me if I did!

Can’t help replying to this, but as a lorry driver I learned roping and sheeting early on in life quite thoroughly, and although I never want the hassle and discomfort of it again ( 15 years of roping and sheeting that seemed to alway be in the rain ) I do get the urge to practice my skills again, it’s a very satisfying art and I guess not so far off splicing and setting sail. I must watch a video.

  20. during the next lockdown ... I will try and splice some new fender lines and some eyes in some mooring lines too. There's plenty of good stuff on the web to help you through.
