Keel glued and screwed in, needs shaping when it’s dried.

More sanding and then top coats next weekend

  5. @Poptop2 that keel is an interesting addition, hopefully well secured.

It’s well secured, but I’m tempted to add an inch to the depth of it. I’m not absolutely certain one inch of keel is going to be very effective. I have a few days the mull it over, so I’ll take them and try to do some research.

Just been reading up on keels on canoes and it seems to be a point of debate. On the one side people suggest it impairs turning and can catch on rocks when doing river trips ( us ). On the other hand they do make the boat more stable and they steer in a straighter line. I also read they can be simple one inch strips or deep three inch keels for open lakes.

I think i'm going to reshape mine at the front and back to make it match the curve of the hull and be a simple one inch deep keel. :)

A quick rip over with jig saw and I’m happier with the keel shape. I will plane it to a neater shape on Friday,

    Update

Sanded the canoe inside and out then yacht varnished the whole thing. The keel was further secured once I could turn it over using brass countersunk screws before the varnish was applied.

More pictures of the inanimate object getting shinier ( sanded picture first )

Left to do is to sand the whole canoe again add another coat of varnish to the inside and gunwales then paint the outside below the gunwales red. Should be done this weekend hopefully.

First coat of red on. Had to brush it as the conditions for spraying were pants this morning.

A thing of beauty. Hope you enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed following it's conception.
I wish I had time and patience to do something like that...

    ...maybe one day. Chapeau!! :hattip:
