  1. Today is a big day in my sons life i think
He is nine and he is going to the shop on his own on the other side of the village it only feels like 5 minutes since he was asleep on my chest needing me for everything

Speeking of that they said on tv the other week that 1976 was the best summer i was 5 rideing round on my tomahalk bike all day till lighting up time going to the river for a swim making tree houses over the fields across the road from my house

would anybody do this now with there kids I feel that my lad is missing a big bit of his childhood but then if anything was to happen to him i dont know what i would do

  2. i'm also smacked off my head on pain killers so i babble abit

  3. Yeah, I was 7 in 1976. It was great. Spent most of it swimming in the river which ran next to our house. Fussing over kids nowadays has got nothing to do with us being in a different era. You have to let them experience and enjoy their independance. Wrapping them up in cotton wool won't be of any help when they get older. It's easier said than done, but sometimes you need to push yourself to let go of the reigns a little bit. It'll do 'em good.

I was 3 in 76. I think we're more caution now, sometimes for the better sometimes for worse. I think the risks have always been there we're just more aware of them now

  7. 9 in 76, was swimming in the old clay pool in Telford, rode there on my bike with a load of mates, parents did not have to worry about us in the same ways back then, it was quite common for me to leave first thing in the morning and not get home until tea time...........not so now, I make my kids carry a mobile with them and they are expected to check in and not go off the estate............but, you have to give them some free reign, it's scary but has to be done. My middle lad is 11 and from this coming September has to catch the train to school on his own ! to him it's a big adventure, but I am crapping myself lol

  8. I remember 1976 well, being 11 and spending the summer in Spain with my siblings and parents in their Comma Dormobile and my father reading about Niki Lauda's near fatal crash at the German Gran Prix. I also remember my parents allowing my brother and I to go off playing football with the local Spanish lads all day, then out in the evening down to the sea front and ports where we used to climb everything, small boats, sea defences, walls and out buildings with our new found friends before returning to the campsite late in the evenings. If only my parents new what we'd been upto!

  10. You bunch of old farts

    I wasn't even born in '76!

  11. I was 10 in 76 and had my own back door key as my parents got fed up with me throwing stones at their window at 10:30pm. My dad was a farmer so was up at the crack of dawn and didn't do late nights. We used to roam around the 3 villages near us often taking the direct route through someone's orchard. In those days there was much less traffic, everyone knew everybody and all the kids were free to go off all day. We even spent several weekends camping alone in the orchard at the end of our garden. News wasn't as instant as it is now and so horror stories of abductions etc. were much less common, all we had to worry about was the Yorkshire Ripper but as I wasn't a prostitute living in the Yorkshire area my parents were not overly worried.

We have only recently started to let our 10 year old son out with his friends. We did give him a phone to start off with but the constant phone calls every 5 minutes updating us on who he was with and where he was going although initially adorable became tedious very quickly. Last night was the first time he went out and didn't come back on time. In the end he was only 10 minutes late but that didn't stop Lyndsay calling me in a panic.

  12. I was 8 in 76 and remember going out at 9am on my bike and not coming home until 5pm for my dinner. Used to play in the woods, old empty houses and down by the railway line- I never let my kids do that when they were 8 - how irresponsible were my parents .

  13. Im not old and ive found myself fussing too much and worrying where its not needed and also thinking back to what i got up to when i was a kid and how life has changed

  14. 76, my first drink in a pub in Swanage - unremarkable apart - here it comes - apart from the fact it was a Geography Field Trip week and we were 16 and the Teacher took us - bless you Rick Burroughs - wouldn't happen these days.

  15. I dont feel it i am lol, 76 was the hot summer , i went to spain and it rained but i was old enough to misbehave  :D O0  who was born in 77 lol. ;D

  17. If my kids do half the stuff I did I will kill um you can get a criminal record these days for scrumping (tresspass and theft) my bum

It is all rights of passage for the young and hedge hopping how cool was that we had routes called The Grand National that had places that were traps for the new ones who came with us. Camping out in the summer down the river having a boggy 90 (Honda c90) to play on and keep running got my first one for 3 quid

We had good times no worries school was a place to go now it all on target or under achieving kids today have it bad the pressure kids are under is excessive to say the least league tables blar blar blar i think we should kick kids out at 9 am and not let them in till 5 pm no phones just 20p for the big red phones if you can find one and see if they could live without the tinterweb

    hhhhmmmm pain killers
