I bought mine to use but i don't like it dirty inside or out, i will wash and wax it again tomorrow if the weather is fine even though it has only done 30 miles since i last washed and waxed it, i also want to hoover it out tomorrow just because i got some grass in it when i camped in it last saturday night, perfect is not the right word, i'm striving for original but used so it tells a story of it's life, that said, if i had the funds my o.c.d would make me have it as new condition but luckily? i'll never be able to afford that.
I pledged to keep rustypearl clean inside and out!!!!!!!!!!! with the babies.. n darren!! lol.. it tends to look like this so had to give up on my OCD
The first time I bellowed at one of the kids for chipping the paint and made her cry, I realised I had missed the point. We bought the camper to have fun together, and to do that you can't be too precious about it. I touch up paint chips ( badly) and deal with rust when I can't ignore it and face the fact it will need work in the future.
I've had mine nearly 9 years and I don't want it to go through another winter as is so its going in for resto in October. At the moment its front arches, part of drivers floor, nearside sill. Nearside rear arch might also need some work. And mine is 'rust free' ;D Chassis and important bits are mint, mechanically its sound. I'm very precious about keeping the body clean, tackling stone chips etc - biggest issue I have is eejits on the street who can't park - my bumpers are shagged but at least they are protecting the body. Inside it goes from spotless to manky in about 5 minutes with food, beaches etc, but it all gets cleaned again If I had a trailer queen it would be a different matter - this week i've been lugging around engines, wheels, gearboxes etc in the back, next week we're camping. It's up to the individual. As for servicing - if you can't be bothered don't - just let someone else do it for you. Of all the modern cars i've had over the past few years about the most I could do was change a bulb and check the oil so I don't bother - everything I do on the van I do myself - but that's because I enjoy it and want to do it and its within my skills, if it had ECU and ABS etc I wouldn't bother ;D
Luckily, Orange is one of those colours that looks remarkably clean even when a little dirty ;D which is a good thing, I last cleaned it before BSO, done circa 500 miles in it since, its still looking clean (ish) I brought it to use not clean and polish, i'll clean it when I really need to (or the local Slovaks will) and when not camping with it (I'll wax it after they have washed it) or, for its birthday, I might even get my pressure washer out !...........never gonna win, or even enter a show N shine, thats just not my thing.
I scratched Arthur's sliding door off our gate post the other day and my lovely husband's comment was "don't worry, we'll stick a decal over it" That's not to say it won't need fixing, but I'm definitely with the "don't worry" camp on this one. My boy is for camping, family, friends and laughter. He's not for showing off (well, maybe a little!) and hours of polishing and preening.
I always used to pay to have my campers worked on and serviced. I still pay the local garage to do all work and servicing on my car - how lazy is that.
I try not to get to precious about it, I certainly don't let a few scuffs or scratches get in the way of it's practicality. It gets piled with rubbish and comes off slightly worse for wear.
