As per the subject above - gearbox in question in a standard 1600cc 'CU' gearbox. I am thinking of installing an uprated Type 1 engine, with the following spec: Mahle eutectic 87mm pistons (standard crank = 1641cc capacity) Twin Weber 36IDF's Engle 110 cam Scat 1.25:1 rockers VW big valve heads (40mm/35.3mm valves - potentially ported and 3 angle valve job) .... I have no idea what power output I can expect but am guessing more than the existing 50hp!? In the future I may consider uprating to 1776cc with everything else the same. Question is, would a 3-rib box be able to reliably and consistently handle the increased power output? The alternative I have is a 6-rib box that just needs the input shaft and bellhousing changing to mate with the Type1 engine. If the 6-rib gearbox can offer a lower RPM for motorway cruising without hindering the cooling system efficiency, I would be tempted to keep it. I would appreciate opinions!!
I wouldn't fret. The gearboxes were designed for commercial vehicles and even a pepped up Type 1 engine will likely give you less power than the Nissan Micra that your Nan drives. In think we Vdubbers get a bit carried away with this stuff sometimes...
6 rib 091 box a normal 3 rib, can handle 160bhp... but launching it off the line all the time will shorten its life!!
