Hello again, Just like the title says, how long should the battery light stay on for when you start the engine up. I have a stock 1600 tp with alternator with a split charge leisure/main battery set up, when i start the engine up the battery warning light stays on until you press down on the accelarator if you don't do this it will stay on . Once it goes off it does not come on again. I have checked the alternator and all seems ok. Just concerned slightly as it is a warning light
With an alternator it should go off after a couple of seconds, as they give good output at low revs. Have you checked that the drive belt is correctly tensioned? I would also check that the alternator bearings are not sticking, possibly prior to failing.
Mines the same it doesent go off untill after a quick blip of the throttle Theres nothing to worry about
Mine just the same, if I put a few Revs on it goes out, as long as it stays off I wouldn't worry mate
If you're rummaging behind the dash, you might have a clean up of the contacts to the alt light bulb. Might also be worth changing the bulb for a newey. As the the alt light current is the thing that provides the excitation current to the alt windings, it's this that'll determine how long it takes for the alt to start charging. In the vans, you've got about four miles of ageing wiring attached to it...
It's pretty standard for the light to stay on for until the revs build up a little, any idea what your idle speed is?
At start up a split charge relay fitted as normal between the WL connection and -ve acts as a shunt across the rotor windings thus limiting initial voltage. Once the speed builds up ie blipping the throttle the stator self excites and remains in that state. Or something...
Fritt is close. Our alternators require a 'blip' to self ignite the starter as the current drawn at idle isn't enough, unless your tick over is a bit high. It's not an issue as you wouldn't be idling for long enough for your battery to loose too much charge.
