Or Bursitis, as it’s otherwise known.
Morning all, great to be back, like a renagade master, in fact.
6 weeks ago, I was at work, helping someone moving all their ‘shed and garage’ stuff, as they will be moving house at the end of the month.
I was holding a fairly heavy box, which was to be palletised along with a load of other stuff, to be stored. So I stood on the corner of the pallet, leant forwards to the opposit corner to place the box, and crunch. Foot went through the pallet, I went forwards, but my foot stayed still. Thought I had broken my ankle, so hobbled to A and E, who exrayed my ankle. No breaks, but tore a ligament. Co Codimal issued for the pain, then told to have a couple of weeks off. ( it rained pretty much continuously for three weeks, so I couldn’t do much work anyway). Anyway. The pain killers gave me a massive gout attack, bigger than I have ever experienced and even my heel on my foot swelled up. Loads of agony, but not from the initial accident. A few weeks and about a gallon of fresh cherry juice later, the swelling had gone down, but I still had a bit of pain, but half way along my foot, not the ankle. Ligament was still sore. Asked for another x Ray, which picked up a half broken through, 5th Metatarsal bone. This x Ray was sent to the RUH in Bath for ‘confirmation’. Went to Bath two weeks ago, as they needed me to do a ‘load bearing’ x Ray, to look for gaps in the bone. Did this, and luckily, it was a partial non displaced fracture. I desperately needed to go back to work, as everything in the garden is now growing, and even though the accident was not strictly my fault, I felt guilty, and didn’t want to let clients down, I told the Surgeon this, and he told me to buy myself a good set of padded boots, don’t wear trainers, and return back to work, but don’t overdo it, which is pretty impossible in my line of work.
Went to Go Outdoors, and paid £249.00 for a pair of Meidl GTX boots in size 9 1/2 ( The only company that did boots in half sizes, apart from Scarpa, which didn’t feel right in the width, bearing in mind I still had swelling from the gout up until about 4 days ago). So now, I went back to work, obviously with muscle wastage in both legs. Managed a few half days, but when I stopped working/walking, I had to sit down as my ankles were so weak. Go forwards to last weekend, something caught in my left knee, which resulted in a bursitis of the pre peppellar (?) bursa ( one on the front in the middle. You have 5). Pain was terrible, and couldn’t bend my leg, so went to the quacks and got a Cortisone injection, which relived the pain, and I was able to bend my leg. Had a day off, ( on the Wednesday) and managed to work on the Thursday and Friday, but I think I overworked it, and the bursa is now swollen again, but not as bad. Spent yesterday on the sofa with an ice pack on my knee, and probably will do tomorrow, too. So much for a nice bank holiday, again, as I missed the first one, in pain, a few weeks ago.
Anyone got any pain relief ideas for this? Don’t want pain killers agin, as quite clearly, they give me gout. I read Tumaric and ginger poultices were a way. But where do you get that much tumaric?
Apologies for the long winded story, but I thought I better come back with something exciting for some to laugh at.;)

  2. That sounds like a terrible series of events... :(
Knock on effects from the 1st incident..
I had bursitis years ago when i was running.. A swelling between ligaments.. A lump appears when squatting down,
Stopped running and it's calmed down,

A pint of Scrumpy and a bit of strong cheddar would be temp fix.. :p

I don’t drink…because of the gout….Herbal remedies do dull the pain receptors, though.

  4. Yea i knew... :D

    Are you resting it,
    with ice or heat..

    Just cheese then... :D

No. There’s not much else I can do.:p:D

  9. In your line of work you should wear knee pads
I spent most of my last job on my knees and even though I have rheumatoid arthritis I think that they have helped to save my knees,
My work colleague would never wear them
And he ended having knee surgery.

I wear knee and shin guards, for strimming, and for weeding, I wear hard fronted but inside padded knee pads. The bursitis happened because of the string of events from going through the pallet. Mainly down to muscle wastage around the knee cap.
But yes, I know what you mean. Also, cod liver oil is good for lubrication of the joints.

I hope you manage to build back to good health, that sounds nasty. As we get older things pile up..

Perhaps you need to take up some lower risk activities like cage fighting or sky diving.

Always like to think that there is always someone more worse off than myself, somewhere, which there is. I’ll get there, in good time.

Those two things are easy. Not sure about what to do for work, though…

Ow!! I had house maids knee. I thought I’d knelt on a screw as it hurt so much. Alright standing up, wrecked kneeling down. I think the doctor gave me some sort of medication but I’ve forgotten what. Foolishly I haven’t used knee pads. Partially as I’m so short the knee pad place on work trousers are lower than my knees! I’ve got some to go over my trousers but they don’t make it out of the van .

    hope yours recover soon.

Thank you. Yes, work trousers with knee pad pockets are useless for me too, at 5’8” with a 29” inseam. The pads are half way between my knees and my ankles. Dickies used to do a pair in the 90’s that fitted ok, but their sizing all changed for some reason. Not sure why, as they were my go to work trouser for knee pads. May have been becuase they stopped making European sizes perhaps. Same with motorcycle trousers…for me, anyway.

I found knee pads make it worse are you kneel down more often as you think you’re knees are protected, I just try to kneel less and do exercises to strengthen my lovely knees :chewie:
