I think a Subaru would suit you - more thrashability plus more mpg?
    Or perhaps a gas conversion?

Gas is a good call , but where do you keep the tank and how much of the outlay can you get back in truth ?.

you need to do a lot more miles than i do to make a gas conversion pay off, infa.ct i reckon other than better performance scooby/golf is a waste of money unless you can do it yourself and get bits cheap

common rail diesel is too complicated, runs at higher pressure, good old direct injection engines are fine, shame a 200tdi wouldn't go in. as for running on cherry...., as if i would.

  8. There are plenty of people who've had a go at diseasel conversions in a bay - there are one or two parts that you need to collect for the conversion though. Main issue is cooling - weasels run hotter than petrol engines. So you need to find some effective cooling solution, which in a bay is likely to be slung under the belly between the chassis rails. The other thing is the engine, to fit, will need to be canted over, and so the main rare part you need is the sump from a T25 Diesel, which is designed to cope with this. The only other thing to bear in mind is getting the ratios right in the gearbox, you never know, the ratios in the 3 speed auto might be OK, I don't know, I've not looked into it properly.

But if you did the conversion, then it would probably return pretty good mileage.
