I decided not to look/check before I set off, but I filled up nr Aber to come home and got to Kettering A14 services on less than a tank including the extra stop along the way and hacking along the M'way AA route planner makes it 220 miles(ish). £49 to fill up at £1.38/ltr = 7.83 gallons for 220 miles = 28mpg or in poo-speak - twice as many as you matey. ;D
Always surprising the variations there are. Certainly an auto box will use more fuel and the 2 liter T4 engine is just about the least economical aircooled ever built. There are also unconfirmed reports that brown paint causes more wind resistance... At the opposite end of the scale, running a 2liter plus T1 on twin webers and a six rib box returned 28.5 mpg over 3000 miles touring Spain and Portugal a few years back.
I travel as light as possible, you travel with as much stuff and people and dogs and things as you could get in there. That accounts for most of it I expect. My 1700 Westy packed to the gunnels used to do 16-17mpg on short runs and the best it ever managed was 23 on a run. If I had the dinghies on a trailer as well it was down to 12-14 on a run.
oh and by the way the fuel guage was at the bottom of the red touching the white and it still had 10 litres in
i think the Wales trip and the speed we did it at proved you can get better mpg at a slower pace and still get to where you intended in time , not everyones cuppa but when your away whats the rush ?.
Seems about right considering your over-loaded camping setup... You're right Malc, I barely pressed the pedal the whole way. 8) Sometimes though (if it's sunny) you just want to get where you're going and spill out of the van beer in hand...
i'm always gonna struggle with only 3 gears in hills, also i guess a westy is the heaviest option? plus 2 litre type 4 is worst efficient engine? would i improve swapping to carbs? dave pie offered me a set
I remember being horrified when I worked out my 1700 cost £1 every 5 miles to drive it. That was maybe 10 years ago. Now I'm getting lots more mpg, but petrol has nearly doubled in price. I still get 4.5 miles per £1 though. 2.5 miles per £1 would have me twitching a bit. It might soon be cheaper to take a taxi and stay in a hotel.
Rick you had 2 adults a dog 2 kids and a packed trailer , i think that's a brill return for the set up and a 2 litre westy auto going up mountains !.
