I was near Hardknott pass near Eskdale- Lane district. I’m really glad I didn’t go there by accident as I’d be rolling down it backwards with my engine going full pelt.
We used to have a member on here that drove over hard knot pass in a bay with a 1600 engine It was the first time she’d driven the van if memory serves me correctly Quite an impressive achievement I thought.
Never had a problem but then again I've never been up there at weekends or bank holidays ... Getting up / down isn't the problem it's the other mobile obstacles . That said try driving from Arncliffe to Malham along the single track 'back' road there's a section where you drop down to a farm at the bottom and up the other side , hitting first gear about 3/4 way up on a hairpin with a vertical dropoff and no barrier - THAT is scary sheeeet , miss a change and you're toast Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Done that, as you say if no traffic you can meander up or crawl down. Stop and it’s a different game, especially if there is a bit of damp ( Lake District ) Then to get traction is “ Tricky “.
I remember one Hardnott Pass descent reported where they then had the driveshafts come off later that day.. only ever did up Hardknott in my Peugeot 306 diesel turbo, all 70HP, which later turned out to be the fastest car on the road at 8000 ft going into Andorra, stayed on the boost with the waste gate open.. And somebody else described descending a steep icy exposed road in a Bay where they had one hand on the door handle to bail out..
Few nice steep hills going up and over the Devrills, here, mind. Mine seems to handle them well, almost run in now.
I've been over Wrynose and Hardknott in my Bay Westy few years back and it was standard 1600cc at the time. It was fine, the challenge I remember was it losing traction on the inside wheel on the tight bends when the suspension met its limit of travel but it just scrabbled a bit and kept going up, 2nd gear most of the way I seem to remember
