  1. Hi all, I've just introdeced myself in my previous post and now I'd like to gather some of your knowledge on my first ever bus!
During our long journey home yesterday I had the feeling that busby wasn't firing on all cylinders. Although i've never driven a t2 before I know enough people that have. Anyway I was dropping down to third on a gradient and down to 35 mph on some of the average hills and after about 2 hrs of driving and two top ups the bus started to lose a bit of power so I pulled the hard shoulder still going but with a lack of power and then there was really loud clanging and banging from the engine like the big end had gone then the sound went but i'm still low on power but I managed to get home Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Without knowing your bus most of that is normal, but first I'd give it a good service and check your valves, timing, carbs, plugs ect ect.. then if its still the same at least you know its none of the above

  3. Welcome,

If it's a 1600tp check your inlet manifold boots, if they are split or perished they may well be sucking in air which will cause it to fire on 2 or 3 cylinders.

    hope you sort it

    keep us posted.

  4. Thanks for your replies lads. I was thinking of taking it to those car diagnostic places. At least they should find the problem for me until I get up to speed with how it all works. Do you think they are any good and would find the problem with their diagnostics?

  10. yeh it could be one of many things if you arnt sure about engines you need to find someone close by who is before you waste alot of time and money sorting out what could be very simple, best give an idea of your location and someone on here whos close may?? come to your rescue or point you towards someone who can. If your able to do stuff yourself then be guided by zed , paul weeding, davidcroft snotty and alike , good luck.

  11. if you think you are down a cylinder mate , start it up , and pull each ht lead in turn and listen , it will be obvious, i.e. no change in sound , prob. wasn"t firing

  12. Are we talking carbs or FI for the 2litre?

  13. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

If it shakes, accelerates slowly max 50-55mph you have 3 cylinders. Maybe wasn't a good idea to carry on but I'd have done the same. Compression test, or failing that turn it over with a spanner and see if the compression on one cylinder has gone awol.

If it has, take the rocker cover off that side and check the valve clearance. One may have closed right up. If yes, the valve seat has regressed into the head. To prove the point, re-set the gap and start her up. Running smoothly? You might get another 200 miles before you need to do it again. It might fall to bits and total your engine. The choice is yours.

No tight valve but no compression? Possibly you've burnt a hole in the piston, in which case I'd expect the oil breather hose to have blown off and oil all over the engine bay.

Good compression all round? Ignition problem.

  15. I'm in Bridgend, south wales if you know of any one i'd appreciate it. I'm working my way through changing things with the good advice on this forum and its definately running better but still not 100%, but i've never owned an air cooled engine before so what do I know :)

  16. I think one of the guys on here is based in south wales, and are into type 4s
