  1. Hi, We were gifted a van, for our son James, who suffers with a life limiting condition Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, we want this van to be his legacy, when finished it will serve coffee, cake and a winning smile form james, it will attend charity events, and all profits will be donated to the cause we attend, it’s give back to all the charities that have supported us and our family along this very difficult road, this is unfortunately being done on a shoestring budget, the van is a 1978 no windowed van that has spent the last year 31 years in a barn, until it was very kindly donated to James, I have spent the last month re doing the electrical system, and now that I have lights on the dash the carb all cleaned out I started her for the first time today, however I keep getting a small flame shoot out from a small pipe outlet on the inlet manifold, could anyone shed light on a) what is the pipe for and b) is there a pipe that’s meant to be on it going somewhere? C) where would I get a small flame from it now and again whilst trying to start it, it really wants to go but dies then fires then dies again, any clues would be very appreciated, thank you in advance

    Welcome to the forum fella.

Have you got any photo's of the motor, in particular the small out let? Might be the vacuum advance pipe going to the distributor, at a guess

  3. Hi, I’m just getting to grips with the site so will upload as soon as I fathom it out, many thanks for your answer

  4. Could be a fitting on the intake manifold to provide vacuum for the brake servo.

I have marked in yellow the position but it’s the pipe behind the braided pipe ??

Is the pipe approx. 4mm diameter or approx. 10mm in diameter?

Smaller one should go to the distributor, the larger one is for the vacuum take off to the servo up front

Can you take a couple of photo's showing the pipe but to the left (the pipe on the right hand edge of your photo) to see what you have got in place and also one of the distributor?

  13. I don’t believe so but it was dry stored , other than a couple of drip places within where it was stored, although I personally think it must have been cranked over because she was very easy to turn and it looked in fairly good condition, not the tinware and it really sounds like she wants to fire up, I have spent quite a bit of time taking things off cleaning them and making sure they are still functional, wiring, starter motor, brakes etc , I just wanted to get the motor up and running before I tackle (or find someone to tackle ) the body work :))

Once you have sorted the vac pipes out you want to do your valve gaps and timeing if its backfireing through the carb.

  16. Hi, it wasn’t backfiring through the carb it was through this pipe that is attached/part of the inlet manifold?

  17. No, as the person that donated had, and they are lined up correctly ref the manual, I did as mentioned before take the carb off and clean it all out. 13A52F1C-1F5E-4F66-833F-233DF2106120.jpeg

You can also use tapatalk. It makes it easy to upload.

Where about are you? Someone might be able to come over take a look and then advise. Once we’re all allowed back out to play.

Here’s my bit of advice... don’t buy anything new if you can help it buy second hand. Make friends with @davidoft. He’s got lots. After him there’s megabug and parts emporium take your choice, I think I prefer the latter.

  20. Hey, thanks for the advise, it’s all welcome, I am based in leicester, I enjoy a challenge and as you say always try to use or reuse that parts the van came with, thanks for the heads up on parts places. This is stumpy, The Legacy Van 33B63419-44E9-4904-89E1-AE21BCBF83AA.jpeg
