Aaah, brings back memories. The amount of 5p coins I've stuffed into German cigarette machines (same size as a 1DM piece, but about fifth the value). Those were the days...

 

Until recently, the 5p functioned in most Swiss vending machines as a half franc coin, which is nearly ten times the value... I think this became too popular, and the tram ticket machines won't take them anymore, apparently. I still get the odd one in my change occasionally though.

 

I used to make my own 10p coins, by filing the edges of 50p coins

Used to get a good scolding from German customs if they caught you with a bag of 5ps. They knew what you were up to, but couldn't really do anything about it. So many naughty British contractors around, they just gave up.

Me too , 3Dm (about a quid in Germania ??) packets of Marlboro for 15p - 3x old bigger 5p which were same size as 1 Dm !!

Memories... It was DM3 for a packet of HBs (my faves), so you got it for 15 (old) p. All the fag machines were mechanical - they were everywhere - so they couldn't tell the difference.

I do quite like whippets. Is that a sign?
