The new owner arranged to have the van sent to Absolute VW in Derby where it will be lowered, wheels changed to 17inch and a pop top fitted. So this is my final pic. Sad day.
Sad day indeed, did you smile through gritted teeth when they listed the planned 'improvements' - although for some people a pop top is essential, having had five tin tops since 1990, if I ever had another van, it would have to have a pop top.
When I first bought it 14 years ago I told the seller I was going to fit a pop top and he told me he would not sell it unless I promised not to do that.
I think I'd rather see it with just a discrete, low profile pop-top than see it lowered with big alloys on it.
I can understand why you might want to adapt and personalise a general bay, but I can't understand why you'd want to do that to such a rare and original specimen as above.
Very sorry to hear that you're selling your unique van John. You're antics and tales with sickbay will be sadly missed.
have you shed a quiet tear? I know that people want a van that’s best fit for their use but I’m with @Chrisd , buy a van with a pop top already. It would be like buying the Landmark then changing to paint work imho.
Yes it's a pity the new owners plan to ruin such a characterful bus. Maybe they have no interest in it's character and are buying it purely for general condition and the Subaru motor as a base to build a camper. They can do what they like at the end of the day as we all can.
Reminds of a smashing early westie in candlwax blue from South Africa but very very unmolested had Fellowes had in a few years back. New owner had it painted in his football team colours, like a silver over metallic lilac. Silver SSP GT five spokes, new interior, Subaru etc, got his kids to take to festivals. or @rickyrooo1 lovely Champaign which was instantly lashed over in a pastel colour to flog by the new owners. People have the means, it’s their decision I guess.
Why didn’t they buy something like a westy already done rather than ruin a classic Type2? Beggars belief!
As you say Zed ..Do as they like . Once on a Classic HGV show i was at , i over heard two guys arguing about the way this particular owner had restored his Foden . It ended up with the owner shouting at him saying " I can set fire to the .... if i want .
If someone knows of a suitably load rated tyre for 17" wheels, I'd be somewhat impressed... A sad day for you....
Whilst I understand some peoples sentiments it’s just a van that will hopefully get used now as Sickbay use too. It had its engine changed to a Subaru and ambulance interior changed to a camper so it’s hardly a museum piece so what’s the problem changing a few things to suit the new owners it’s not as if they are repainting it.
