Going oversize on barrels

  1. @Paul Weeding do you have a 96mm barrel on the shelf that you could measure the OD of at the base of the cooling fins? The skirt has to be a wall thickness of 1.5mm, otherwise the case would need machining.

  2. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

This is just the thinner part that slots into the case.

  3. That would mean buying 4 big lumps of alloy steel. I already have these barrels.

  4. I see. gonna be flimsy when hot and give the piston skirt some jip i would have thought. As i say - im not really in the know so should stfu really!

    Nor me. :)

  6. Nor me! :D

  7. Yeah like that's cheap .....

Now I don't know much but I thought 1700 and 2000 barrels were different sizes and heads and case need to be opened up to fit 2ltr barrels to a 17/1800

  8. The skirt size is all the same on all the engine sizes... barrel size at the top of the 1700s is different, but a 1700 piston is 90mm... so you can't bore out a 1700 barrel!!

My 2270 runs bored 2l barrels... I'd much rather have a vw casting, albeit bored, than an unknown and possibly chinese one!!

I'll have a measure up on skirt diameters and differences, as I've a few 1800 and 2l barrels kicking around that I'd put to one side for oversizing

Might not be today mind!! :)

Another thing to take into account is that the top of the piston only ever goes 71mm or 66mm down from the top of the barrel, so the skirt of the piston will never come out of the bottom of the barrel more than a few mm at most!!

  9. Nice info Paul. Confirmed what I had been assuming, all cases are much the same. It's bore and stroke that determines capacity.
I'll be interested in those sizes when you have time.

  10. I had a quick 5 before lunch... And the 1800 barrel is identical to the 2l barrel apart from having an extra half mm in the wall thickness!!

Numbers are from measuring a 2l barrel and piston...

Piston skirt max protrusion is 20mm

Oil scraper ring position has a barrel wall thickness of 2.8mm

1st and 2nd ring position has a barrel wall thickness of 8mm

So if you take 1mm off the above figures you get the bored figures :)

  11. Cool. Thanks Paul.
I'm gonna go ahead with the boring. Just have to find some suitable 96mm pistons now. :)
I'll have a look myself in a bit but any ideas welcome.

  12. Pistons are 47mm from crown to centre of wrist pin and 80mm overall height.
    Best I get searching. :)

  13. Don't forget that they need to have a 24mm wrist pin too

    oscar likes this.
  14. or get the rods re-bushed

  15. Also an option

  16. No luck with the piston hunt yet. But I will be ordering one of these soon, for final fitting.

    @Paul Weeding

Question for you, after reading this thread - Ive got an AP code 1800 motor with the following barrels:

diameter at the top is ~92.3mm with a wall thickness of ~6.2mm - I couldn't get an accurate measurement as the top 20mm of the barrel had some carbon/rust built up. Ive not pulled the barrels off the pistons yet but they look okay, what can be done with them, will they stand some boring out?

I have now got the correct heads (one was correct 1.8 big valve but the other was a 2.0) & would like to go 1915cc with some form of cam (all just ideas at the moment)! You know the motor btw - Al (bumpnudger) has spoken to you a while back with ideas, its his old one he was going to build for his westy!

  18. Yeah, you can take them out to 96mm as well

Eurorace II grind cam, I just dropped on in @Owen Snell 's 1911 camper engine!! Goes down the road Very nicely

I need to have a word with the machine shop that I use... see if they are up for some barrel boring... but I will also be putting in a order with my US supplier, so I can get Keith Black pistons in 96mm for the 66mm crank!! @oscar ;)

  19. Had a word with stateside tuning today. They can supply the Keith black piston set, flat or dished with hasting ring set for £235+vat.

  20. Are the pistons different for different strokes?
The ones I got the price on was for 71mm crank.
