  1. Hi all

I happen to look in the engine bay today whilst out stretching her wheels and noticed this......

The 2 long black plug things from the brown big cable..... are they suppose to be attached to each other? what are they for? is something going to go bang if I put them together?

I've never noticed them before, but being completely ignorant to all things mechanical, have no clue!!
I no I no i need to learn..... but that's why I joined this forum

There should be a glass fuse in there, can't quite tell what the wire goes to, could be something that's been added? Possibly leisure battery charging cicuit, have you noticed anything not working.

  3. she's completely electric free in the back..... no leisure batery, stereo or anything in the back.
Only thing that's stopped working recently is the wipers... motor works but arms only move if helped (have been told a nut needs tightening up to help this)

Forgot to say she's a 1979 lhd 2L injection cali import

Does it have the extra electric cooling fan in the engine bay? Does that work?. It looks like it might be the group of wires that come off your alternator but it's difficult to tell. It may help if you take a wider shot of the engine bay.

  5. I have no clue about the extra fan does this pic help any more (taken a while ago but looks like it may have been unplugged then)... if not i'll take another tomorrow...

the fuse is for the fan at the top, if its been taken out chances are the fan has siezed up. you could try a fuse in it and see what the fan sounds like you will know pretty quick if its iffy

^ I was heading this way to. :) That is your aux heater fan right in the middle.

  8. Cool the thing that looks like a hair dryer is a fan? oooooo I've learnt something new!!!

A point in the right dirrection for a fuse please? take it we're not talking house hold 13amp!!!

What will happen if the fan has seized, broke gone kapoot and I try it..... will it blow anything else in the Van by trying it?

You'll have to forgive me.... if it's not making it look pretty.... i'm not a lot of use!!! :-[

    I think it's a 30mm glass fuse, get a couple from Halfrauds.

If the fan is stuck the fuse should blow again. The fan shouldn't work until you pull the heater controll lever on the dash. You could connect the fuse holder with no fuse, still no fan but a bit safer.

  10. Sorry ... heater control lever? the red up/down one? is this why I have no heater do you think ... forgot that doesn't work either!

Really sorry for the idiot questions but I really know nothing about engines/ vans ... just always wanted one!!!

I don't think you can buy a new one, you need to look at second hand or refurbing the old one. Try the forsale section on here, ebay or post a wanted add. :)

  15. Great thanks. I'll see what it's doing first. Fingers crossed the po was just as blond as me and it just .... fell apart and the fuse dropped out ... lol I can hope!!! :)

Stick your fingers in the fan and try and spin it

You can take them apart and free them up but if you do need a new one they are sometimes call a snail fan.

as others have said not necessary needed and pointless if the rest doesn't work

I would check all the pipe work is in place.
Check the heater cables from the dash to the exchangers move and open and close the flaps in the exchanger.

Then move on to the electrical side of things
    Is the fan ok
Is there is a switch on the red lever on the dash, this put power on a relay by the fan.
And then the fuse holder gives the relay 12v when engine is running witch then powers the fan

  17. I think you have to test it with the engine running, even with the control in the on position its not live until the alternator is charging

  18. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

...and you need a continental fuse - like the ones in your main fuse box.
