Gearbox rebuild recomendations

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by seanlithman, Mar 9, 2021.

  1. Hi I have a 1776 putting out about 85hp my original 72 gear box is getting a bit tired in my westie. So I’m thinking about getting it rebuilt perhaps with some taller gears similar to a freeway flyer
Can anyone recommend a good gearbox builder who can pull it apart check and replace the warn parts and rebuild it for my needs?

I’ve heard of a company called cogbox and that they are very good. But that was years ago, so not even sure they are still about. I remember they were pretty old school and difficult to find their contact details as were quite aloof as they’re always in demand.

If you taller gear it you'll loose all you gained from upping it to 1776.
IMHO you need to be up at 2L+ before you even think about it.

  4. When i had a 1776 i had a standard box.
When i went 2110cc the standard box wasn't enough so 'Bears Motorsport' rebuilt me one with 6rib equivalent gear ratios.

Give them a call, have your tyres sizes to hand and what your current box is, they will be able to recommend what to do eg rebuild current one as is, or change gear ratios.

What revs are you at when doing 70mph on current gearbox?

  5. There is also a guy who used to be on this forum who rebuilt a few gearboxes for people on here.

    I think he was called@nobody

I have no experience of him, but hopefully someone who has used him will provide his contact details

  6. I seem to remember @Dub and Dubber had a gearbox rebuilt by @nobody ??

I did indeed ... It hasn't been in a bus since being done.
He's not on here any more but I can DM a mobile number.
Last I heard he was based in North East London, and Wales, making journeys between the two, and would not use couriers in case of damage in transit, so it depends a little on where you are etc ....

  9. ^this. if you've got a CE or CU box, keep it as it is. Taller gears or a higher final drive won't really gain anything, and if it doesn't work out you'll have to take the tranny out and have it rebuilt again. The engine doesn't rev that high with the standard ratios.

Also: what do you mean by "a bit tired"?

  10. John rebuilt my Bug's box, seems a sound chap and it's done about 7k since and three summers without issues, other than being more noisy than I had hoped, but I don't think that's John's doing, more the car and the way the box is spec'd. I would use John again.

One word of advice, if I may, a rebuild of your original box may take longer than you think, save the job for winter, or get an exchange unit instead.

  12. didn't realise he also did proper gearboxes, thought it was just T25 boxes.

Excellent if he does do bay boxes

    I might be wrong.

nobody overhauled my 091 6-rib a couple of years ago. 3rd gear synchro was just as bad when I got it back as it was before the overhaul and he offered to replace the synchro rings if I bought new ones, but I’d already paid him (a lot) to do that once.

  15. FYI; we have a Vwh freeway flyer in our beetle and after about 5 years the fourth gear now whines. Luckily I didnt pay £1600+ as previous owner fitted it !!!!!

Keith at Kens Customs (Upholstery) has recommended him to me, should I need any gearbox work. Says his work is excellent.

  17. Whereabouts are you?

  18. John seems to have a good reputation amongst the racing community, least he did when I asked, that's why I went down that route. If anyone is going to need lots of gearbox work, the racers will. I suspect, most race boxes need doing each season.
