Gas hob goes out :(

  1. Hi I have a Westfalia Berlin with a twin gas hob, when i lit one (hold in until it warms up) it stays on, the other one goes out. I assume its the thermocouple, if so anyone know if i can repair it, or where to get a replacement

  4. Mine does that occasionally, I overcome it by pushing the knob in and out a few times:rolleyes: and relighting.

    Always works for me:thumbsup:
     
  5. What gas are you using and at what pressure? The original German spec Berlin was set up for propane at 50 mbar. I wonder if like mine it was switched to butane. If so I have a remedy.

    Is it a US Campmobile version of the Berlin, @Bodman ?
    If so afaik they don't have thermocouples. It's likely the burner and air supply tube is blocked.
    The caps gently twist off. They are held on by a steel spring clip that sits in a groove, turn it gently until it reaches its cut out and it will lift off.
    Underneath you'll see alloy corrosion from the burner.
    Gently clean it and blow it through with air.
    At the front, those 2 holes inboard of each control knob are the fresh air supply tubes. They also get blocked up with webs etc and need blowing out regularly to keep the flame burning safely.
    I can only speak for ours, but it lights instantly without having to hold anything in, hence no flame failure, just gas or no gas...

    Edit, I've just noticed you have a control knob in your picture on the left that ours lacks, so it may be a different version. So there may be additional features on the Euro spec models. Worth cleaning out the burners and tubes anyway...:thumbsup:
     
  7. Not a knob but a rubber bump stop - there's some smaller ones on the fridge vent.

    To the right of the bump stop? Looks like a pull/push switch. Ours just has a hole there through which you can read the manufacturers plate etc:thinking:

    Ah, the US ones had a integral switch/tap/city water fitting. The red push switch is a replacement for the o.g. white twist thingy that disintegrated...

    And the burner caps just twist off like this. No thermocouple as you can see on this version:thinking:

    Unless that little tab in the burner is one but I don't think so, but stand corrected if it is...

    Your one Neil, is exactly like my US version before I tried to fix a small leak in the tap and buggered it up totally :oops:

    I remember. A chap called Stewart used to run a business called Westfalia Spares. He had these taps for sale. Haven't seen him about for a few years now but he must have got them from somewhere. Might be worth trying to track him down if you need one...

  13. Its actually a US import but it does have the thermocouple on the back of it. The front one stays lit if i hold the knob in for about 5 seconds, the back one the same, but it goes out after 10-20 seconds. and your right, the button to the right of the rubber bump stop is the pump for the water tap :)

  15. OK this may not help. The German spec Berlin that I have came originaly set up for propane with 50 mbar regulator. A previous owner had changed this to butane with a 28 mbar regulator. This is the usual sized regulator for UK using butane, but it doesn't equate to 50 mbar on propane. On mine the flame was puny, and easily went out. A kettle took ages to boil and the fridge wouldn't get cold enough. To get butane to work properly on mine needs at 37 mbar regulator, but all the regulators this size that I know of are for propane and have a reverse thread on them. I got round this with an adapter. It is a common fix for boats travelling to different countries.

    If it looks like this might help I'll post more details.

    If you want , you could try one of the cheap bead type K thermocouples off eBay and then basically you need to clamp each of the two old strands of wire to the wires coming out of the gas valve. Provided you get the wires the right way round, the current should flow and hold the gas on by holding the solenoid open while the flame makes the bead glow.

    Ok so it’s defo one with a thermocouple. Although when I lit it tonight it stayed alight. Any idea how to get it out. Can I leave the hob in situ and just pull it out from below

  18. I checked and as you say im on butane with a 28 mbar regulator. Any Idea where i can get the adapter for the 37 mbar one

  19. 2021-09-13 001 506 (600x800).jpg OK, this applies to a German spec Berlin. You have a US import so I don't know what spec gas arrangement it would originally have had and whether what I've done applies to you.
    You can see on mine there is a sticker inside the cupboard saying 50 mbar. There was an empty propane cylinder and a 50 mbar regulator in it when I got it but the previous owner was using butane with a 28 mbar regulator. This proved to be inadequate, so I got the set up you see here. I didn't want to revert to using propane as the bottle was much too big.
    There's a standard tap that screws into the bottle, then an adapter, then a 37 mbar propane regulator. All the bits came from So.Cal in Southampton see https://www.socal.co.uk/ . Get it checked by a gas engineer if you decide to do this.
