I've got the plot ready but working my way through planning at the moment. Originally I was going to go for an oak building with a shutter door and tiled roof. The planning guy was suggesting they would prefer brick.
My builder reckons wood will be better for the van due to the breathing. I'm beginning to think brick with a breeze block inside wall.

    Any thoughts?

  2. Whatever you use dont forget the ventilation you cant put a wet WOMBAT in a garage

You could compromise and have plinth brickwork with wood above.
I don't see the problem with full brick garage, my garage 'breathes' just fine with brick and block. If your tight for space and are not worried about heating the space then forget the block skin. What size is the floor area/footprint?

I can fit in 10ft x 24ft with the double skin.

Thats a wide and long single. I would go with full cavity walls the same spec as a new house, plus ceiling and floor insulation. This gives the building options for future uses and makes it cheaper to heat now.

Add some mains drainage and a cold water supply to one of the back corners while you've got the digger running ;) I'm forever nipping back to the house for a pee!

I hadn't thought about the drainage and water but we could do that fairly easily. It's quite nice to be able to specify the garage for the van so I want to get it right.
Looking to have a ridge with enough space to pop the top up, and have storage for a lot of the camping stuff that lives in the spare bedroom at the moment :)

If you go fully vaulted you will have no loft storage, calculate your total van height, plus some room for lights etc and go for a raised tie truss or cut roof the same. You could get fancy and go vaulted above the van and have attic style trusses at the rear to form a small mezzanine for storage.

You'll have to start a thread when it gets underway, I know I'll read it :))

  12. Hi dude, I'm about to do exactly the same thing as you. Just getting ready to apply for planning. Be good to see your progress when you get going :)

My plan is to build a wooden one from scratch. Will be a bit of a project but should be satisfying when its done and I can park the bus inside!

If you check out a forum called 'detailing world' there is a section on there of garage builds. A guy at work showed me this site. Warning, these guys are obsessed with cleaning their cars. They even post pictures of their collections of cleaning products!

Garage builds are pretty cool though ;)

My penny'orth , same as silver really go full building spec , ie cavity walls 2 metre footings etc , it will reward you in the end if you decide to upgrade to a granny flat or Bungalow because you have done the hard work previously for not a lot of extra cost .

  17. the form work for the hole will cost more but hole could also be more usefully used as a reserve wine cellar ;)
