Fuel tank breathers

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by lowie, Jul 10, 2012.

  1. A few of you may know I had running issues at camperjam at the weekend
So I ve found out my carb is ok
    My fuel line/filters are clear
I am replacing the fuel pump tonight
But my mechanic (who. Can't get near it for a week)
Has suggested that my tanks breathers could be blocked
Am I right in thinking theses are them pipes you can see though the rear air vents and are linked to each other by a pipe on the roof of the engine bay ?
If they are is it just a matter of blowing compressed air through and listen for them in the tank ?

yes they are Ste, they should meet in a t piece in the engine bay roof, as you mention.

I'd be wary of blowing compressed air through in case you get poop in your petrol tank and contaminated the fuel

  3. I think there's plenty of poop in there all ready and if I can get it through till winter the tanks comeing out any way

I have read somewhere that a blocked gas tank breather system had caused problems in the past for someone. I'd say gently blow air in one and feel/listen for it to come out the other one. Don't force air in in case the flexible pipes are that perished they cause it to split.

  5. or you could run with no fuel cap to see if it makes a difference !

  6. I'd doubt whether your breathers are blocked. Does the petrol tank cap hiss when you undo it? Most unlikely it'll do it - if it doesn't, the breathers are fine.

  8. steve remove the fuel pipe off the carb fuel should run out if not give it a blow until fuel runs
i`ve had this years ago and it worked for me

  10. How does it "break"?

  11. It just loses power and stops like running out of petrol
This has happend four or five times now and everytime apart from the last two
There's been no fuel in the pipe from the tank to the pump
After blowing air back into the tank I ve managed to get fuel to the pump again
The last two times I ve had fuel in the pipe to the pump give it a while and it will start And run for different amounts of time there is also a faint hissssing to be heard from the engine bay after said breakdown s
I am not over confident that changeling the fuel pump will cure it but for the price of a pump I think it worth a go

  12. I don't suppose it the fuel filter collapsing in on itself , when under load?..
Big rich has had this happen.

  14. Just a thought what are symptoms of the fuel cut of valve being broken and how do I test it ?

  15. I checked your fuel cut off valve at camperjam dude and it was fine

Do me a favour dude and go and look at the fuel exit on your tank and let me know if its a screw in union or a brazed on pipe

  16.
  17. It's ok dude I know where I am looking now I ll put the pump on and have a look when I get home :)

I think there's something floating about in your tank thats blocking the outlet randomly. The JK sticker from a new tank sender for instance.

I had a bus in the workshop like that. It would just stop, maybe after 10 miles, maybe after 50. The less petrol in the tank, the more often it conked out though. The tank had been refurbished inside with a kit, but bits had peeled off after an engine fire (we worked out).

Sometimes when it stopped it would just start again and be fine for another random distance, once I had to wait for 1/2 hour for the obstruction to float off. Blowing up the pipe would sort it.
