Fuel barb on weber progressive

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dr Ben, Dec 30, 2012.

  1. Hi, thinking of revisiting using my old weber progressive carb

However i was never happy with the fuel barb as was too big for 6mm van pipe (I can't recall how big but certainly 8mm or more.

Is there a way to change it ie. can you unscrew them? Or do I have to use a brass reducer and a short length of pipe?

    Thanks
    Ben

Mine came with slightly larger than 5.5 mm pipe provided in the EMPI kit, but as the standard fuel pump barb is also fairly large, using proper fuel line clips secured the pump end.

By that I mean you have to push it on both ends just the fuel pump end is easier.

  3. I'd buy a brass adaptor - easily available. You won't get the barb out without knackering the carb.

Pushing pipe on to fittings that are too big guarantees they'll split and leak later.

  4. Thanks,

it's a weber not empi and about 8 yrs old. I thought it would knacker the carb if removed so will buy a brass reducer.

When I had in on the van before I had to use slightly larger bore hose but was never happy with it on the fuel pump as even crimped up could turn it and it was ever so tight on the carb end.

Thanks, will see how it goes

  5. The van ran really nicely with the carb though!

  6. you won't knacker the carb by pulling it... I upgraded my twin webers to JIC fittings from barbs...

  7. Hi

Is the original barb a screw fit? oh...do you need any sealant when screwing the new bit in (ptfe tape or some other grungy stuff?)

    Thanks

  8. The original barb is just an interference fit... also looked like it had some sort of sealer on it too

I tapped the carb body, then fitted the new fitting with some thread lock!!

  9. Thanks
