Fibreglass tinware

  1. Hi guys and gals

Today I have replaced the front horizontal bit of tinware with a cool shiny black piece of fibreglass - I have the piece that goes around the back of the fanhousing but I'm not clever enough to attempt that bit on my own! My question is - part of this fibreglass replacement touches the right hand side cardboard air tube (not sure what the correct name for this is - sorry). Is this likely to be a problem, such as a fire hazard? Should I take it off or will it be OK?

Can't see it being a problem other than maybe damaging the pipe.
That fuel filter is likely to be more of an issue!

  3. Thanks for your reply! What's wrong with my fuel filter?

    It's in the engine bay....
Not the end of the world but it does introduce 2 more possible leak points into your engine bay.
Personally, I'd take it out and put it under the fuel tank. Then replace those 2 pieces of fuel line with 1 piece.
    All imho.

  5. Ohh thanks for that advice - I'll get it done before I drive her again. I did have a glass and chrome one once and that giggled itself loose and squirted petrol over the engine on the Severn Bridge (Bristol to Wales). I waited 1.5 hours for the RAC and they never came out. My son talked me into changing it over the phone - luckily had had the one that you can see on there now, in my spare bits/tool box. (Now in the AA not RAC).

I wouldn't worry about it too much or let is stop you driving the bus; just swap it out when you get a chance.
    :)

  7. Is that the "tin" from kingfisher? Have you installed the type 1 beetle tin to close off the engine bay properly??

I've just noticed you've got over-braided fuel line too. May be worth spending an hour swapping it out for decent stuff.
    :)

  9. Paul - no it's not. The braided fuel line is less than a year old - I change them every year around MOT time :)

    Fair enough!
I'd replace it with non over-braided next time though; its easier to see what's going on with it.

  11. You need to get one on there, otherwise you'll be drawing in the hot air from the engine and exhaust, and potentially overheat the engine!!

  12. The fuel filter is the wrong side of the pump , so it's on the pressure side of things , best place is after the tank above the gearbox
