European trip train journey tips and places to see question.

  1. Sounds like the trip of a lifetime :thumbsup:

    If you're doing Bavaria, you've got to do Munich (my old home). By train from the main station (Hauptbahnhof) you're sorted: just walk out across Karlsplatz, on to Marienplatz and through the city centre. It's actually not that big. Down to Odeonsplatz for lunch, then up Leopoldstrasse. Plenty of stuff to see and do (and drink*). Worth hopping on the S-Bahn and going down to Pullach, just south of the city, one of my fave places. It's the wooded river valley of the Isar a bit closer to the mountains (also the HQ of the German Secret Service, if you want to pop in to say hello ;)).

    Berlin's well worth a visit: great city. Last time I was there, the wall was still up! Being meaning to go back. Know folk who live there: it's belting.

    Gah! I feel homesick now :(

    * Don't drink Spaten. It's cat's p*ss.

  2. That sounds like a great adventure Poppy

    I've not done train travel in europe, but I did an east coast trip in the USA about 10 years ago. Bought a rail pass and just followed my nose.

    I had a rough idea where I wanted to go, then ended up thousands of miles away. I had a brilliant time.

    I took way too much stuff and would definitely travel lighter next time.

    Enjoy, it'll be fab

    Hopefully, the trip will be a good experiences. I have no proper experience of European train travel other than one trip in Italy.

    The plan is falling together on the back of the cafe project faltering. I haven't asked the boss for time off work yet,but just told him I am probably staying on for another five years if the cafe thing falls through. When I know for sure and tell him I will use it as a bargaining chip. Fingers crossed eh?
