We love train travel too. We have done the length of Italy on to Palermo and loved it.

What's Bern doing in Switzerland? Not skiing the Lauberhorn again is he?

@poptop2 your trip sounds fantastic, why did we never think of that?

Come on then guys. Sights to see. Places to go?

  8. Germany , Austria , Slovenia , Croatia and back again - easy - take the LT

If - for financial reasons - you think £1100 is reasonable for a four week holiday ( which it is ) , i think you`re forgetting accommodation , travel surcharges , you`ll be eating out , cheaper hotels will probably involve a taxi ride etc etc etc ...
Being realistic i think you`ll struggle to make it for less than £800 a week as cheap hotels might be a problem being summer and most of Europe will be on holiday !
I really hope you give it a shot and wish you well , sounds a great idea and i love the idea of `winging it`but i don`t think it`ll be as cheap as you think , especially if you get to Scandinavia ...

    I really don`t want to put a downer on a great idea - Just my tuppence-worth .

We are adding £140 a night hotel cost and hoping a lot will be cheaper. A few more expensive. I have been checking on line and based that on German and Swedish hotel cost per night. I am reckoning on not much change from £5k overall

  11. Istanbul and back in the LT - beaches all the way

I think 5k is pretty realistic to be honest - fair play , if you`ve got an itch scratch it :D

  14. I am envious, sounds great. Have a look at some episodes of Great Continental Railway Journeys on BBC iplayer or YouTube. They always inspire me and often provide information on places to visit or stay en route.

  16. Its a wierd way to live for a while ie get a train from one end of europe to the other just for the sake of sleeping on it. zig zagging across the continent. Dunno if you can still do that.

  17. Watch out for Portaloo. He keeps turning up all over.

A bit like inclusive holidays in hotels ,no escape...

Camper holidays are the way to go ,arrive at a destination ,if you like it ,stay ,if you don't drive off into the sunset...
