Guys, Off to europe in 3 weeks, holidays, so it's going to be warm, doing a lot of miles....... Budget running low so which gauge / clock should i invest and install first? 1. Oil pressure 2. Oil temperature 3. Cylinder head Temp 4. Rev counter (not strictly high on the list) I want all but money is tight at the mo! Which one and why????? (pics if u have them) I like this layout but it's not my Bus - Just a wish pic!
Hijacking the thread slightly, I've got an oil temp gauge in my van but what's healthy and what's not temp wise? Just so I can worry myself
Cool day, tootling around town - anything up to 100ºC. Restrained amble down the motorway - 110º to 115ºC, maybe 120º. Real thrash the n*ts off it in a cruel fashion - up to 125ºC (but don't do this). Your values may vary.
There is an article somewhere on the web that states the proper operating temp is 100-120c. Thats what I go by
Sounds about right. Useful to remember that the operating temps of air coolers can bang about all over the place in normal operation. Water coolers tend to be far more stable, temp wise.
I have a voltmeter.. and a temp guage which doesnt work.. On a side note though, the dash in that pic is lovely!
VW never fitted gauges. In fact, legend has it that they sent out a service note to dealers in the US, discouraging them from fitting gauges, as customers used to crap themselves and bring cars in for no good reason. Says something if even VW didn't like them...
Sorry, I forgot to add that I was referring to the cushioned dash style where it wraps around the stereo housing and under the glove box, rather than the metal finish. Haha...Guess VW didn't want to worry their customers!!
As said previously a speedo or I put the tom tom to kph also so set your tom tom petrol stations on places of interest and a good fuel gauge or just top up every 200 ml, You don't need any others you go a a trip like this to enjoy yourselves not to keep checking gauges and unless you have a highly tuned engine you don't want a rev gauge just use you hearing, And if you are worried your getting hot stop and have a break, Steve,
Padded dashes were for the US - I don't think you could get them in Europe. We had to crack our skulls on bare steel ...
