  1. what is a good ball park figure for a engine rebuild currently have a good strong 1835 but lookin to upit to a 2lt , i would be supplyin all parts just need a labour cost , ive had quotes rangin from 500 quid to over 2 grand so am bit confused ,

  2. Buy a Haynes and tackle it yourself! If you come a-cropper at any points in the build then go to a garage but you will save oodles of ££££ and it's not too hard a process.

As for cost - there is always someone who can do a job cheaper and cut a few more corners than the last guy. figure on about 10 hours work maybe if you give them a loose engine? Maybe someone in the trade can offer a more accurate figure.

  3. I wouldn't put something together with parts supplied by someone else, unless all of the parts were verified new and in their original packaging.

Estimates of £500 to £2000 sounds about right. It's all down to risk management. At the g o end of the scale expect no comeback. To do it right you're looking at around 3 days, maybe 4, to include cleaning of parts, measuring, mock up etc. work back from that with an hourly rate to get an idea

What are you looking to achieve with the upgrade? I'm guessing parts will set you back around £1500 to £2k

Whatever you do don't buy a Haynes in order to do an engine build, unless of course you want a pile of scrap and swarf at the end of it :)

Try the bug me videos and Tom Wilsons book if you want to do it yourself

  7. you pays your money you takes your choice. Remtec are probably the only 'volume' builder offering a fully decent product. Year 1 warranty is parts/labour, year 2 is parts only. A type 4 2 litre will cost you £2595 for the long block. £500 exchange surcharge. I'm guessing yours is a type 1?

Factor a day to build it up, install it, tune it, road test it. That's assuming all of the ancillary parts are fully functional and present. The warranty will be based upon the skill of the installer.

Typically, as with all things, you get what you pay for. You'll find the odd character who comes highly recommended and cheap. These people run business's which rely solely on their experience and their reputation. They may not be making big bucks but they're honest. Zed springs to mind - the people on here who have had call to use him seem to be happy. I haven't used him myself so can't comment directly, but you only have to read through his technical postings on here to know that he knows his stuff and you'd be safe in his hands. I don't know if he does engine builds though

Do a search on here, VZI etc and you'll soon get a handle for who the schysters are, so you'll have a gauge for what you should be paying. I've read some horror stories - I can't comment on those as I haven't had the experience to know how much is true. It seems that for every happy customer with some of the engine places there are normally 2 or 3 unhappy.

Luck of the draw and all that. I'm not an engine builder in the professional sense - i've built 4 now in total since last winter/spring. I think I know enough about them to confidently say that £500 would be a rush job, and that at the other end of the scale at £2k you'd want a full build up and install and an iron clad warranty
