Engine rebuild - is it time??

  1. Hi,

Running a 1600tp engine code AD in my '76 Bay. Unknown origin or age.

Runs Ok - burns about 0.6 ltr of oil every 1000 miles.

Compression test reveals 80 - 85psi across all 4 cylinders.

Bit of end float but not excessive.

Would you take it out and give it an overhaul now before it gets too worn and are the low compression values a sign that it is 'time for an overhaul'?

  2. if it aint broke dont fix it

  3. :yeah that:

  4. did you do the compression test with the throttle wide open?

cos if you didn't, that will give you a low reading!!

  5. Oil consumption looks good. Up to a litre per 1000 miles is acceptable. Also did you run the compression test with the engine properly warmed up?

  8. Just getting mine done at present. I was going to wait until winter but with the weather being poo i put it in now. Mine was using half a litre of oil every 50 miles.

  9. Cheers Guys - glad I asked.

Sounds like my lump is about a 50% used engine - so plenty of miles left in it yet.

I'll stick with the 'if it ain't broke' rule .......
