Engine out for first time this week...fuel tank and ancillaries!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 76BayPhil, Jun 8, 2020.

  1. Morning all,

So now I've done as much as I can on my interior refit (until I get my bed from M1 in another 2-3 weeks anyway.).....now is the time to get my engine out!

I've got some corrosion I'm worried about on my fuel outlet pipe from the tank, so I'm going to use the chance to check everything else at the same time.

I've read up on getting the engine out so I'm pretty happy with that side of things.
    -up on ramps, chock front
    -disconnect or remove ancillaries; battery/fuel/filter/tinware/accelerator cable/stainless back-box
-trolley jack engine, I'm going to make some sort of board that fits on the jack.
-unbolt engine from gearbox. (4 bolts?)
    -unbolt engine support bar.
    -lower engine and pull out
-get it in the garage and clean it!!!

Then I've got some welding to do on chassis at side of engine bay, and give the engine bay area a really good clean and paint....it is disgusting at the minute!

The onto the fuel side of things; I'm expecting to replace the tank tbh(as the outlet is one piece with tank) but what else should I be looking at checking or replacing?

Looks like another wet week, so may as well be working on the van again!

    Thanks all

    Phil

  2. I’d wait until you’ve got the tank out before deciding. Go easy taking the tank straps off. Change the breather hoses and if necessary the filler hose.

At some point I'm going to take my engine out for the first time as well. Is there a convenient thread (looked and can't find) of jobs to think about one the engine is out or could we create one here?

To start I'm also planning to check the clutch for wear and tear, front and back oil seals and sorting out old defunct wiring out.

I would suggest that you separate the wiring job from the engine out as otherwise you might reach a "cannot start engine" point when it goes back in and you might have made a wiring error during the tidy up...

Or at least get the engine wiring tidied with it still able to start then take the engine out.

  5. Hi with the engine out and tank out check the fuel sender working and that the fuel system is in good order the filler neck pipes could at least 40 years old like all other perishable rubber pipes on the fuel system, there has been loads of busses destroyed by engine fires, if it looks knackered then replace but go for good quality rubbers as some are no better than the ones your replacing.

  8. There is a thread that I'm following closely.

It's on here, search under..... VW bay engine removal.

    Good luck.

I'll keep this thread updated with my progress.

  9. Yep...... Plenty of boards and cloths to lie on!

  10. So she's nearly ready to come out.

I've built a board and a timber track to lower it onto, then it can be moved down and slid out more easily, and into the garage.

Hopefully this will make lifting it back into the van much easier, and means I just use my small jack withiut needing to get another one.

  11. So it's out, reasonably straightforwardly.... Although I did have only 3 engine bolts! One of the top ones is missing.

The bottom two bolts are more threads... Rather than removable bolts..... Is that right?

  12. The lower two are studs, rather than bolts.

  13. Sweet, thanks.

Are they replaceable? Mine don't look in perfect condition...

  15. Which bolt is missing at the top? Bet it’s the starter bolt.

  16. By the clutch cable mate.

  17. Easy enough to replace, although a struggle to do up.
