When looking at replacement engines i took the view that they are too cheep, why are they half the price of anyone else. I bet they have re used parts that are right on there wear limit and may be ok but don't expect them to last. I have engine issues and have taken the view to try and rebuild my own with a aim of getting a strong reliable engine that should last
I think however much you spend, you rarely get the attention to detail you'd apply yourself. Reason is you'll take a month over it where a professional builder is up against the clock trying to make a living. ***** get dropped. For a standard engine where you don't need to know anything that's not clearly in a book somewhere, home build is fun and satisfying and not too expensive if it's a T1.
I recon the middle one is a TES one without the vat as its ebay http://www.coolairvw.co.uk/Item/Sho...Long_Block/TESSILVER/T.E.S_Silver_Engine.html Lots of opinions on tes and cheep re builders http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=570460
Mate its a minefield ,I got shafted by a VERY reputable engine builder in Manchester Over 2 grand as well. Didnt even honour the 1 year warrenty.
Cheers all I'm tending towards building my own especially as I've got two knackered ones to go at! What I save will go towards twin carbs and a new exhaust.
Thought about 2.0ltr but I'd need everything, tin wear, ancilliaries , mounting bar etc so probably a dear do. Quite happy, for now at least to get a good std 1600 that doesn't pour oil everywhere and I can be reasonably confident will get me there and back! I'll start a new rebuild thread, i'm already at case splitting time on the original engine!
