Engine failure

  1. Does look a bit sunken. Worth taking the valves out anyway if you've got the kit, give 'em a bit of a lapping?

On it.....the right tool always helps (gone a tad rusty though from hiding unused in the back of the shed)

It was a BP petrol station that I made my mistake at....... I saw the green and blue tag/label on the pump handle and the words 'ultimate' and assumed it was the E5 petroleum. Turns out the correct pump I should have used has a green and "light blue" tag/label on the pump handle with the words 'ultimate' on it.

  5. Give the valves a good lapping in. The carbon deposits soon build up on the valve seats & are probably why your compressions are so low.
Memories of a Lupo i once had  don’t ask

It was 1974 ......and panic. They have blown up ...not many . No time for logic , whatever is around you will do .

Measure the valve stem heights with a straight edge across the tips.. should all be level. If the exhaust seat is receding that tip will be higher.

Here you go....looks like the No3 exhaust and No4 inlet are a similar height. No3 inlet is the least cut valve seat as it is the lowest. No4 exhaust is the highest by a long way.

  9. Hmm. What's the seat like? Valve stretching?

I think I'd want to take the valves out and examine and check the lengths.

  11. They're out!

Happened to me in a Megan , the motor was like sawdust inside when disassembled.

    Both exhausts...
The new EMPI 040 heads fitted by the VW Engine Shop seem to be quite nice.

  14. They are actually..
    Out Out....:p

So today has seen No3 and No4 reassembled and No1 and No2 removed to be de-coked.

That has now been completed and the engine/short block is back together.

The new crank seal is also in place so tomorrow is refit flywheel and clutch before all the tinware and ancillaries get put back on.

The engine can then be refitted at which point fresh fuel will be obtained so as to see if the engine runs.

I just need to purchase an oil filter cartridge for the remote oil filter as it slipped my mind to get one.

On a plus I have found somewhere that will take the 60 litres of dieseloleum and not charge me.

as it's 9:15pm I'm calling it a day and will get up early again tomorrow so as to continue.

To be fair I didn't check as even if they were I have no choice but to reassemble the engine if I hope to get the engine running before Friday. If I was to order spares the parts would not arrive in time.

I have to accept that I'm in the market for new barrels, pistons and heads.

The heads on it are actually 1600 heads that were machined for 1776 barrels by 'Bluebird Customs' some years ago when they built the short block for Laurie Pettit.

a valve guide dropped shortly after it was built and that was when Laurie 'drove' new guides in both heads and then cut the valve seats....I think he was in a rush so one head has the offset valve lengths.

I lost 3hrs today having to attend an elderly alcoholic friend with Alzheimer's who has had covid and is now suffering incontinence with very loose bowel movements and who is unsteady on his feet so can't make it to the bathroom in time....... it wasn't pleasant and there was no way I was leaving the cleaning lady to deal with that s##t on her own.

So I am now here and hoping to have the engine mounted within the next couple of hours.
