The low compression readings will most likely be due to me turning the engine over slowly by hand......I wouldn't expect such a low compression would allow my petrol engine to run like a diesel as it's the pressure/compression that ignites the diesel.

but yes I do feel silly and have some work ahead of me.

At least with the diagnosis you know what to do. Any chance of having it done and driving for the weekend away?

    good luck.

My wife and son are hoping I can.....looks like a few long days and late nights ahead.....

...... I may have some cheap Jerry Cans for sale soon ........ once I've disposed of the contents.

Despite the Doh! moment, I'll bet you felt a sense of relief when you sussed it.

  8. Well that’s the first time I’ve heard of that happening in all my years on the forum

    Glad it was nothing serious

Phew. Hope it’s sorted in time for the weekend. I was going to suggest it may be possessed but I can see that would have been incorrect:)

Looks like very little damage, just the scorching from the overburning fuel - good job it was modern diesel and not 1970s stuff.

If its just diesel, lucky mistake as it will have done little apart from beginning to burn off the carbon that was there.

Its a glowplug engine not a compression ignition engine - old single cylinder engines work like that with low compression but a hot spot .. a catalyst or thin piece of metal in the combustion chamber or glowing carbon does it..

If you got those very even compression readings by hand, I wouldnt worry too much.

As petrol is added to diesel in the winter time, yould use up the mixture in an older diesel car...

  12. I thought the same. Creepy how the distributor turned through 360*

  13. So pleased it's nothing serious and a straightforward fix , thanks for the update
I've recently been making a point of double/triple checking the fuel gun before filling up , mis-fuelling is easily done with usually 4 options on each pump and different suppliers choosing colour coding/branding for unleaded or diesel which is nothing like the supposed universal standard.
BP seem the worse with both types of fuel pumps having an excess of yellow and very minor differences to denote which fuel you're putting in ....

Crack on and hopefully you'll get there

Some parts have had a first pass through the parts washer whilst the fuel tank is being emptied.

Luckily I had an old Jerry can as one of the new ones has a bloomin hole in it and is going back tomorrow.

Just got to get the carbon fully off the head and piston crowns without causing any damage..... as the engine is out I may as well de-carbon the other head once I've reassembled this one.

Once at a truck garage way back ...Had a knackered Commer 2 stroke that wouldn't stop ...burning up it's own oil ,they ended up stuffing rags into the supercharger to stop it inducing air . I read of a bus once (old ) went crazy and they ended up actually undoing the sump bung and letting the oil out in shear panic as everything else failed to stop it .Seem to remember it was an old Crossley .

These days just use a CO2 fire extinguisher in the air intake.

  19. Keep your diesel/petrol mix for parts cleaning

    Clean of carbon.....

.....I may take the valves out to check the seats....

Doesn't No4 exhaust valve look low in the seat compared to the rest.
