The way I see it is that original buses attract a smaller purist following which particularly values the originality or to a lesser extent an original sympathetic restoration of a vehicle. So those vehicles have a potentially smaller market but may command a higher price than a bus that has been brought back to life with a lot more work even if the end result to the average viewer looks similar. Anything new or non-standard detracts from that value even if we see it as an improvement.

But two buses with a similar history of ownership and originality may differ in value if one has a rebuilt engine and the other has a knackered one for example.

As for how much we spend on restoring/upgrading our buses, I don’t think it’s ever realistic to expect one will get that investment back pound for pound.

I’ve spent quite a few thousand pounds over my ownership of 17 years, but this doesn’t mean I’ll get that back if I sell it.
I’ve had all those years of usage for that ‘investment’ or expense.
What it is worth is what someone is willing to pay for it, which I can only guess at compared to what similarly presented (in terms of condition, originality, maintenance history etc.) buses actually get sold for despite the asking price.
That doesn’t relate to what I’ve spent in my eyes. Or what another has spent on his bus.

Over the years though I hope my expenditure is offset by an overall increase in bus values dependent on market forces, and there’s absolutely no guarantee of that. Add to that the time I’ve benefited from having the bus which always comes at a cost on anything we buy to use.

  2. Modern cars are far worse, folks pay a fortune for maintenance and fault fixing and depreciation is massive year on year. Few folks will even do an oil and filter change and seem happy to pay whatever garages would charge for even simple jobs.

I've probably broken even over 20+ years and 5 buses.
The free tax has paid for some petrol.
There have been thousands of unpaid hours though.

Hmmm. Another generalised rule of camper hunting is avoid the ones that have been done up to earn money. Often tarted up to look good rather than restored.
New engine. That's nice but who built it?
The interior is useless. £20k?

  7. It’s not just eBay. Even some of the ads on just kampers leave a bit to be desired. Crazy things like listing buses as westies with the wrong roof on them etc etc

  10. That’s what I can’t get my head around when I see people who’ve imported buses from South Africa or, Oz or California etc. There’s absolutely no way I’d ever have the bottle to do that. I’d not sleep for the six weeks it took to arrive in the UK

Yeah, I usually manage to rip myself off even when I see them!
