  4. What would be the latest late bay? Should this be a thread on its own?

but thse from brazil are bays are they not? might be different but still bays

  8. Yes indeed they are bays. I was just wondering what was the latest german late bay. This question in no way cast doubt on the bayness of the brazilian bays but asks when was the last german bay built etc. Neither does the question cast any doubt on the quality or relevance of the brazilian bay to The Late Bay.

In short when was the last bleeding german late bay built.

I will not succumb to your subterfuge as you feebly attempt to make me say something i may regret regarding brazilian bays. I am not Baycist.

  11. I have a late 73 crossover??!!! Doing some homework, as it was a Swiss fire truck VW used everything they had from what they had left from crossover production to save money for the authorities??!!

  12. I noticed a few comments about fuel flaps and early door handles - it's worth noting that a lot of the features we associate with late bays didn't come in until '74. Fuel flaps are common on a lot of '73 buses as well as late '72s, I think it wasn't until the 1974 model year (so August '73 onwards?) that the round locking flush fuel cap came in. My '73 also has early sliders and cab doors I think are specific to '72-'74 buses. My bus is also supposed to take an early fuel tank, but thanks to the tool commonly referred to as "the persuader", it now has a late one instead.

The change from early to late was not a sudden change, but a gradual introduction of bits and pieces, although the major changes to the chassis with the larger engine bay did come in pretty much from the beginning. And there was also a lot of using parts up.

My one piece of truly nerdy trivia is about the fuel flap. With the introduction of the crossover, you can see it moved from the middle of the panel above the wheelarch to further back in the panel, right next to the intake vent. This was because otherwise you couldn't open the sliding door properly on LHD buses while someone was filling up at the petrol station. With it moved back, there's enough clearance, even with the sliding door fully open.

  14. Baycist! :yeah that:

  15. Mine was born 18th July 1972 it is L reg but has all the Crossover features eg low lights, petrol cupboard, square air intakes and large rear lights and early bumpers. I didn't know there waqs a difference between early and late bays because I had never noticed until I became an owner. Gadget Boy pointed it out to me at my fisrt show (Bus Freeze)

  17. According to my buses birth certificate mine was built on the 9th of March 1972, and left the factory on the 13th of March 1972.

    Mark :)
