What are the options for a drive to be made from?

So far we know the usual suspects:

    Tarmac
    Paviers
    Blocks
    Concrete

    Anything that I've missed?

My preference is for a long lasting, durable surface that wont show too much oil :), Mrs H wants something that looks nice.

    It's not a huge area 4x5m ish.

  2. Gravel is good you can hear thieving barstewards walking on it. espec if its deep enough

you can get that "concrete" that looks like blocks, trouble is if you get a burst pipe or suchlike it spoils it, i had block paving although it's sunk after years of 2 ton landies on it, you could of course go full council estate chav option and gravel it so the cats have a great place to crap and the kids can sit outside dropping all the gravel down the drain.

  4. Yeh gravel is good ,especially cold icy weather and dont notice oil so much+ you can always take it up easy and change for something else or different colour if you get fed up. Bit noisy if your trying to sneak in after a night out thou ;) I have tarmac and block pave though shows marks that messy VW nurses leave.

  5. many yeas ago when i had my 1st house i had a little out building of sandstone. the tiles where slipping into next door basically. and the man came knocking complaining. when i told him the missus had run off and i was in no position to spend money on the roof cause it was too small, i convinced him the sand stone would be good for his renovation. in exchange for some wooden gates,
As it turned out he lent me his pick up toget rid of some surplus base soil.
and lo and behold a nieghbour 2 doors down dumped a trailer load of gravel for me one dinner time,
so the gravel was good as it was free, and also worked as a deterent as you could hear it crunching when people walked on it.

I did have a letter of complaint from the ex for doing work with out her permission, i said dangerous in state of repair cost '''''''£400 to have removed, you want to pay half.

sorry for hijacking your thread ;)

I had this stuff on my drive because I wanted gravel but had a slope. Still looking good 12 months on :)
Needs a good solid base though .

    Basically stuck on gravel 8)

  7. I've heard it said before (Joker recently said it too) that gravel drives can be the cause of rot and rust on your bus. That's because gravel drives retains moisture, and a lot of it.

I'd have a think about if you want to work on the vehicle on the drive - if you do will the surface take a jack or axle stands?

I have block paving, seems fine with both, and my motorbike side stand too - I had tarmac at the last house and that was easily dented.

I think Rick mentioned it, you can get cast concrete that looks like block paving for an ok price and it hard wearing.

  9. i'll take a photo of mine later ... its stones .... looks very nice and they can be replaced over time

I'm likely to want to do some machanics on it so gravel/loose aggregate ma not be suitable.

  11. thats what mats are for - i use a gym matt and dont feel the bumps ... Mrs H could just use you Matt ,,,,

Paving slabs could go under the van also for a flat surface

dont forget that anything impervious to water needs planning permission now! that includes concrete paving slabs, concrete and i believe tarmac.
gravel and properly laid block paving don't need planning!

Generally the better it looks the worse it is to live with. Concrete therefore wins. And flourescent strip lights in your living room. ;)
