Devon pop top question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Jörch, Oct 23, 2012.

  1. Hi there,

I have taken off my Devon pop top. The tin top of my bus is completely rotten, so I will have to replace it.
I have taken a photo of the rear right corner where the Devon pop top was fitted.

So here's my question: Does this look the same on your bus (apart from the rust), or is this a homemade reinforcement?

  2. No, that, unfortunately, is how devon did the roof reinforcement

  3. Thanks a lot for the info. What a nice piece of work. ;D

Did other manufacturers (Viking, Danbury) do this the same way?

  4. This is how Devon left the roof apature on my bus!

    Not the best craftmanship!

  5. pretty much the same as mine ;D

a butchered hole and no paint on the reinforcing ::)

  6. I'm so relieved that this is not homemade,

...but crafted by people with years of experience! :))

  7. I personally think that they used gremlins to chew through the metal to create the hole in the roof ;)

  8. Mystery solved. :))

So they took a Mogwai, put it in the garage with the bus... spilled a bucket full of water... and quickly closed the doors.

  9. It's shocking isn't it? Anything which was hidden looks botched. I took the external fridge vent off my moonraker the other day and the hole in the panel looks like it's been cut with a tin-opener on a penknife.

  10. Jorch, did you get your van from britain? I didn't think Devon exported to Europe?

  11.
  12.
  13.
  14.
  15. That sounds good, thanks a lot!
I'll see if I can get a hoop. This may take some time, but I'm not in a hurry. 8)

  16.
  17. You're right there.
I also have a good tin top in sight I can use, but it is not from a scrap van.
It's from a guy who wants to convert a syro camper into a tin top, so he will keep his hoop. ;)

  18. Sorry for doubleposting, but after starting to remove the tin top, I've got another, quite similar question.
Although I can guess the answer, I dare to ask the following:

Is this also original Devon- made roof reinforcement?

  19. Quite possibly... I'd have to have a closer look at mine, but it's gonna be a while before I get to it

  20. That's easy to find out: If you can't see the welding points (is this the correct term?) in the gutter, you also have this reinforcement. ;)
